Stumped ....

Okay, several people have now suggested that I "scrap" ;) the sashing idea, and I'm beginning to like the suggestion. In fact, last night I cut out six more quarter-blocks to use in the setting triangles; I'll see how those look before I make a final decision on borders.

Such a sacrifice, Connie, is more than I could ask of anyone. ;)

Ooh, I think purples/eggplants would be fabulous in the setting triangles. Spread one color all the way around the top! Then I think I'd audition homespuns to see if any color speaks to you...

Your colors are reminisent of all of the colors in the leaves on the trees here right now. We are having the most beautiful autumn this year. But 40mph winds today will probably change that! grin

They don't look scrappy to me. They look like planned shaded blocks; one blue, one pink, one green etc. They almost look 3-dimensional from the shading. Scrappy would be all the colors mixed together in all the blocks so each block would have blue, green, pink, etc. in it. Scrappy would actually be easier to sash since almost anything would work, but there are other alternatives.

I wouldn't use sashing at all. I'd pick a light colored print, different from but similar to the background prints used in the blocks, that is either a neutral or has a little of each of the colors used in the center of the pieced blocks and use it to make alternating squares and setting triangles. Turn the pieced blocks so the light sides all look like the sun is hitting them from the same angle, add the alternating blocks, and call it done. If you need it bigger you could add multi-colored flying geese in a random color pattern for a border. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I thought the same, I wasn't entirely sure whether the darker colour in each block had been chosen to have a purposeful variation in value, the brown block, for example, does look like 2 darks, 2 mediums and 4 lights, but the blue block seems to have 4 medium and 4 light.

To me, these blocks exhibit very clever selection of fabrics, particularly among the lights, where I would have overlooked many of them as having too dark a pattern, or too many different colours, or too large a print, but which have been pulled together almost perfectly, it's not a set of scrappy blocks, it's an outstanding use of multiple fabrics across the entire colour range.

Both of you are giving me far too much credit, but thanks anyway. The blocks really are simply an "experiment" in putting together lights and darks to get quarter blocks; the quarter blocks are then put together. In the class, we were to pull random darks and lights and pair them to make the quarter blocks. Once home, I simply pulled more reds, more blues, etc., to make more quarter blocks and put them together. I truly believe that it's the design of the block itself that gives the effect (at least the effect that I see) of a sort of undulation. The other ladies in the class I took have the same opinion

-- at least with this particular arrangement of the pieces of the block. There are eight variations of the arrangement possible, but this was my favorite.

I'd be off to the LQS today to find some more neutrals for my setting triangles, but my car is blocked into my garage. That's because the fellows installing the granite countertops are here! :D We'd expected them on Monday, but they were able to come today, which means we're hoping for water in the kitchen tonight, if DSonIL can come hook everything up. :D The LQS will have to wait.

How exciting to get your granite installed! Woohoo! I love the look and feel of granite, bit I am a teensy bit leery of it. I was watching Home and Garden television- they showed a beautiful house with granite countertops. But one very large piece of granite on the breakfast bar side was split right in half. The homeowners said a guest had set a hot pan on the counter and it just exploded into two pieces where there was only one. That massive crack scared me from ever having granite since I am a holy terror when I get baking- I can totally destroy a tidy kitchen and dirty everything in it within minutes! Any way, the purpose of this long ramble is to warn you to not put a hot pan on your new countertop. ;-)

How awful, Leslie! The installers specifically told me that I *can* put hot pans on the granite with no problem at all. :S The installers were here at 9:25 (I expected them at 10:00!), and they left at about 6:30. They're not quite finished, but it was simply too dark for them to be able to make accurate cuts on the remaining little pieces. So far, though, I'm *delighted* with how it looks! :D DSonIL is here now, figuring out how to move the water hook-ups so they'll work on the new (different size) sink. We should have water in the kitchen soon. :D I may not have a garbage disposer tonight, but at least I'll have a working sink. ;)

If you had pulled random colors they would be scrappy (and you could give all the credit to the teacher), but you didn't so they are planned. So, yes, some of the credit should go to you. Debra in VA See my quilts at
