sunflower block search

I have asked for this before and had some nice replies, but still no match. My husband's grandmother made a sunflower block. The center was a circle, the petals were petal shaped, but gathered to the edge of the middle circle, then there was the usual background. The petals were not raised, as in made separately, they were sewn in like any curved piecing. The only difference is the base of the petal is gathered. I would love to find this pattern, I have never seen it since we had the quilt she made that I, unfortunately wore out through too many washings.

I actually have a block like this that was made by the local Amish. It is fashioned into a quilted something like a large potholder or trivit. Here's a pic:

sure what the name of it is, but 3-D Sunflower is as good a nameas any! You can have it if you want it, no charge. I've had it on a pile on things I intended to list on eBay but just haven't got around it it yet. I know this doesn't help you to make one but it may help you find the pattern or else draft a pattern from it. Send me your snail addy privately and I'll send it to you. About 18 or 19 years ago my brother sent me that pattern- just like Mickie's block- the block Jeanne found has petals that don't touch and Mickie's touch at the circle. He bought it from Land's End catalog. The block pattern wasn't 'right'. I messed with it many times over the years. But the pattern doesn't have the name of the block on it. Just in case you find the Land's End version- beware. Good luck in finding it.

Yes, that is definately it, jeanne, though the sample I have does not have the pieced background squaring it up. I also found it in Block Base which I believe is a direct copy of the blocks in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Blocks. It is block #3428 and is labeled "Star Dahlia (LCPQ #19, 1980)" which means it was in the Ladies Circle Patchwork & Quilting issue #19 in 1980. Hope this helps, Autumn! Mickie

Hey Micki:

Your potholder jogged my memory and went to my closet where I store all my quilts. I found a summer quilt my mother made about 40 years ago of this very pattern. She did it all by hand. Its a full/queen size AND she used a bed sheet for the backround fabric. It's all hand quilted.

I don't get it.... why don't they use Flying Geese on the sides to get the points of the star? It's soooooo much easier, faster and fewer points to match. Sheesh! Lazy quilters unite!

As far as that goes, what's the point in piecing the center square? All the triangles are the same color??? This block has me completely bamfoozled! But it's pretty- no doubt about that.

This is so close, but it did not have the star in the background. I think I will do some fussing with this pattern and just take that part out. I believe her's had the petals touching since I only have a sunflower in my memory of it. I am not sure about the star. I am going to ask my husband and sister-in-law to look at it and see what they say. But with this pattern I know I can have a nice start. Great job everyone!! It's been 35 years I would guess since we had our's.

Thank you all again, all the repies are really appreciated.
