Thread painting and/or machine embroidery

I have become totally fascinated by these techniques. Check out these links and see if it gets to you, too! ;-)

Both have books at amazon.com with the 'look inside this book' feature.

Absolutely amazing, gorgeous, glorious work from both artists using a basic sewing machine and a variety of threads. WOW!

Leslie, I used to do quite a bit of FM machine embroidery, but I haven't done it in a couple of decades, at least. Now I'm quite interested in doing some thread painting, which I'd think is like embroidery, but done to enhance a pieced or appliquéed work. I'm planning to take a one-day thread painting class from Melinda Bula in January, and I'm really looking forward to that. :)

Thanks for those links -- my wish list at Amazon has just become longer. ;)

Now, how did I know it was going to be your name at the top of this thread before I even clicked on it? 8^D

I'm getting my nerve up to try it, but I need to get my basics down first, and I'm a slow learner...

Nice stuff though.

I just took a class from Linda Fiedler on thread painting at my guild. It was fun and actually pretty easy. We started out with butterflies. I also attended a lecture at Houston this year from Nancy Prince. Both their techniques were similar, with some slight differences.

Last spring my guild held a workshop in thread painting. Had a great time, picked up a few tips, and completed 2 thread painted projects! The one thing I learned was that you have to have a greater contrast in your thread colours than I thought. The workshop was a tulip project, and I had brought a whole range of thread colours to work with, and only used the darkest, lightest and middle range - tried some of the others, but they didn't really make a difference.... It sure is fun!
