very easy crib quilt

I just played with Bibbidy Bop from Fons & Porter's magazine Jan/Feb 06. Well, sort of. That quilt was designed by Betsey Mennesson and you can see the general idea at

. First I fussy cut frogs, bordered them and trimmed them wonky. The next step was adding large half squares on all 4 sides and giving them a wonky trim too. You can go on forever doing this until you get a block size you need. The fun of doing a block like this is it absolutely does not matter if your ¼" seams wander a little and there is nothing to match. The only trick to the whole quilt was getting the frogs to hold still. Polly

And furthermore, I just noticed the price of the kit. Gulp. If you don't have a copy of F & P Jan '06 and need one, I'll be glad to send you mine. Polly

Polly, just go to the Topsy Turvy page and you can get the same effect:

and the pattern is free! I like free!

We make Topsy Turvys at a lot of our events 'cause they're so easy to make. You can use applique blocks for the center blocks. Mostly we use kid prints or blocks that kids have colored.

One of my volunteers has made several where she just kept adding strips and cutting them wonky - they're cute! I have a picture of one quilt that she made on our Linus website-

For this particular quilt she took the blocks into her 3rd grade granddaughter's class & the kids colored the squares.

About the only difference I see is adding triangles instead of rectangles on the 2nd go round. Doesn't seem to make much difference and oh my yes, I like free too. Polly

What I like about the Topsy Turvy is that you don't have to cut triangles, you just cut strips.

We've been using the scraps left from the trimming to make flat pillows for the Animal Shelter. We make a 'pillow' about 16" or 17" square, stuff the scraps in, sew it shut, sew across diagonally from corner to corner so the scraps won't shift so much and you have a pet pillow to go in the cages at the shelter. They don't want the pillows very fat because it takes too long to dry them. The shelter was really pleased with the first batch we took in to them. So, the scraps don't get wasted either. We use ugly fabric, not suitable for kids, that has been donated to us for the "pillows."
