Washable Crayola markers... not washing out..

Hello, Every time I have used Crayola washable markers to draw a quilting design, they have washed out at the slightest bit of cold water hitting the fabric. So I wanted to embroider a lavender design onto a white handkerchief, and used a red Crayola washable marker in order to see where I was going. I have tried cold water and it seems to be staying in. I just put the handkerchief in a sinkful of cold water because it's 1am here. Anything else I should try? I want this to be a gift for Monday. Not much time left....

Jo,

Here's what it says on the Crayola website. Two things to remember in the future: 1.) test a bit first and 2.) try to never use red.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

How to remove Washable Markers from clothing or fabrics:

Cleaning Materials Laundry detergent Bleach for colored clothing (Clorox 2=AE or Biz=AE) Hot water-110F or higher

Stain Removal Tips Rinse stain with hot water-if noticed before laundering. Wash in hot water with laundry detergent for about 12 minutes (heavy soil cycle). Soak in a Biz or Clorox 2 solution, according to the instructions on the box, for one hour and repeat laundry cycle. Repeated laundering should remove any residual stains.

Please Note... The suggestions for removing stains have been compiled as a service to our consumers. We are unable to guarantee or be responsible for the results obtained by these procedures. You may also wish to consult your local cleaner for further recommendations.

Before attempting the stain removal method, test each procedure on an inconspicuous area of the material or surface to be cleaned. Please be advised these stain removal methods involve hazardous products and are intended only for adult use. Crayola does not recommend children attempt these procedures.

In many procedures, specific brands of products are recommended. These are brands that performed most effectively in our laboratory. Always check individual containers for recommended procedures and warnings. Competitive brand products may work equally well.

I bought DD a second hand designer silk dress from a charity sale I was helping at and then discovered it had stains on (looked as if it had been put next to something that was wet and dark coloured and the dye had run.

As I had a cotton jumper that the same had happened to, I bought a product that said it would get dye stains out and it worked (even on the 'dry-clean only' dress thart went in the washing machine beautifully. I can't remember its name but I got it from our local Co-op so it must be one of the readily available products. There is a Dylon dye stripper - it wasn't that - that would remove the lavender colouring too. I think it was quite expensive, but if you are desperate...

On the other hand it might be easier, and cheaper, if the other remedies don't work, to spend your holiday weekend embroidering another, this time drawn with pencil.

Good luck.

No holiday here - working 12 hours on Sunday, 6 hours on Monday, and then taking an exam on Tuesday. It looks like the soak overnight in cold water did the trick. Whew! Next time I'll use blue or green, as I usually do! (Panic over).

When I use Crayola markers, I try to use a color that gives some contrast but won't be too obvious if it doesn't was out completely. In your case, I probably would have used purple; if it didn't come out completely, it should fade enough to blend in with the lavendar. The only time I have used red is on a pink fabric or when I quilted with red thread. I used a blue one yesterday to mark quilting lines when the fabric was mostly blue, though it washed out of the white quite nicely. Of course, I always throw the completed quilt in the washer with nice warm water and soap.
