When it rains,

It pours.

I got my featherweight a week ago.

Yesterday, we began the task of cleaning out my SIL's house and Lo & Behold, my MIL who died last summer had apparently purchased a Jenome Gem Gold right before her death.

I couldn't find the manual and the only foot I found was a wide one, but if this machine is worth it, I may buy the 1/4" foot to piece with. Has a zig zag which the FW doesn't have. It would be a great kid's machine.

Sure is light. The Gem was one I was considering when I didn't think I was ever going to find a FW.

I also brought home 2 - 4 ft tall closet organizer racks with 5 drawers each. They are mesh and my fabric will get dusty, but it looks so much better than the plastic drawers that were starting to sag. I bought those plastic tops for them and I traded out one deep drawer for 2 shallow ones. Perfect for charm squares. I wish I had room for one more rack for nothing but FQ's.

Next life.

Cindy-

I used my Jem when my 6600 was in for cleaning. I originally bought it to sew on my lap when stuck in bed for three months with my hip replacement, but I was able to use the regular sewing table and chair by then. I found the Jem has a very nice stitch and hums right along. I was happily surprised as I thought I have to make some sacrifices for it being so small and compact. It's a great little machine! I think the 1/4 in. foot would be a smart investment if you are going to use the Jem.

Sorry about the very sad circumstances in which you acquired it......

I have those.....one in each end of my sewing room closet. In the middle of the closet, I hung two of those hanging sweater bags and folded my fabric around an 8 1/2" ruler. The fabric then fits perfectly on these sweater shelves. Leaves room in the drawers for my fat quarters.

You will love the Gem. I don't know about the featherweight, but I have a Gem which I leave out even though I also have a 6600.All of the attachments from my 6600 fit on my Gem. Actually, all of my Kenmore attachments fit on the Janome's also. Seems like Janome makes the Kenmore machines. LOL

Sew on them both before you give anything away. You can probably find a manual online - maybe even free to download.

You did indeed hit the jackpot! The Jenome Gem Gold is way better than a "great kid's machine." I hope you can find the rest of the feet for it. You will love using it. Since I got mine, I no longer carry my Featherweight around for sewing away from home. (When I take a class in techniques, however, I lug my Bernina 440QE since it has all the bells and whistles.)

You should be able to order a manual online or from your Janome dealer. I think the manual is a necessity because I can never remember how to thread the needle, wind a bobbin, or change feet when I go to use it. Enjoy your Gem!

In early December I decided that rather than getting a rolling tote for my very heavy Bernina 1630 to take to classes or working guild meetings, I wanted one of those lightweight machines that are out now. One of the ones that I checked out online was the Janome Gem Gold, along with a couple of other Janome models and a Brother CS6000i. They all weigh around 10 lbs and most of them have many of the stitches and features of the larger machines. If money hadn't been an issue I would have asked for one of the Janomes, but "Santa" said it was more $$ than the budget allowed. So I got the Brother CS6000i instead. If you have the Janome Gem Gold and want to be able to take a machine to class, I think it would be a good investment to buy the foot. I am as happy with my new "little" machine as my larger fancy one.
