Wondering....

On RTCQ I've been exposed to so many different quilting techniques/styles/methods etc. Love the results of all of them. But I've been wondering, how often do we stray from our favorite methods/styles/techniques. I suspect some of us may be more adventurous than others. :-)

So what is your favorite method/style/technique? Do you ever try others? And if you're going to branch off, what do you hope to try?

I'll go first.

My favorite quilts to make are full-size quilts, with traditional patterns, made in a scrappy or semi-scrappy style. I prefer using templates. My favorite method is hand-piecing and hand-quilting, however, I machine piece and machine quilt too.

I'm branching out with my machine quilting by learning FMQ.

I intend to branch off further with an appliqué wallhanging eventually.

All I'll say is that I must be one of the least adventurous on the group. I will try difficult, and more difficult; complex and obscure, but rarely do I venture far from what I like (I tend not to do block quilts very often - more one design on a small-ish quilt). Favourite techniques: number 1 has to be foundation paper piecing and its variants; I also really like fabric manipulation, as in Jennie Rayment's style. I have become able to free-motion quilt, but I am satisfied with doing what I know I can do, in that regard - so that I don't ruin the quilt that I have spent months making >g<

Horror to most of you, I often use very similar types of fabric throughout a quilt - I have done a few scrappies; but they are only about 12" square!

I must try to prefect a few more FMQ designs - maybe feathers? (what do you think Sandy?!) . In message , Michelle C. writes

When I was quilting about ten years ago, it was simple pieced patterns, especially baby quilts for Project Linus. This time around, I've finally learned that it's okay to make things just for the fun of it, things for ME. Combining that with the need to have something (ANYTHING) to do at work when it is sooooo slow in the winter (I'm a receptionist at a construction inspection firm), I began hand-piecing and hand-quilting small, wallhanging or lapquilt sized projects. I find it relaxing, especially in the evening when DH is watching tv and the sewing machine would make too much noise.

I currently have to sew at the kitchen table (located in a corner of the living room). I'm working on cleaning up the den, a tiny, tiny room (about 7 ft x 9 ft.) where my computer resides on a very large corner desktop. Even though I won't have space to store fabric, etc, I think I can make enough space to push the computer, including the old (large) monitor, out of the way and set up my sewing machine on a temporary basis. The major problem is that the room is the home of Miss T, a long-haired feline QI who has the nasty habit of barfing everywhere. A cheap, new plastic shower curtain over the sewing things on the desk ought to solve that problem.
