Finished the March BOMs

I decided on the Wild Zinnias for paper-piecing and the Clover Blossom for piecing. I took Elly's primroses and leaves and her idea of putting them into a basket. I used a paper-pieced basket that's a Carol Doak block and I appliquéd the primroses and leaves onto that. I was very happy with the way it turned out. My appliqué is steadily improving, but I'm still not enjoying the process. I liked the outcome, though!!

To Estell UK, Elly, Pat on the Hill, Kay Ahr, Sandy in Henderson, Sharon, and Boca Jan......thank you ALL for such nice words about my quilt blocks. I'm also happy with my blocks and colors. Now I'm getting worried that I'm going to mess up the whole thing with my less-than-proficient machine free-motion quilting on a domestic machine. However, that's really my only option 'cause I don't have the $$$ to send it somewhere to be quilted.

Consider about quilting it in sections Carole. That should be a lot less scary and physically demanding. If you work it out ahead of time - like now! - you'll be able to arrange it in the best possible way. Having smaller pieces in the machine at any one time will reduce the stress on all concerned and will mean you are much less likely to do boo-boos!

There are several ways of quilting in sections. Perhaps you could Archive the group, as we have had several discussions on the topic. .. In message , Carole-Retired and Loving It writes

I've tried different "quilting in sections" techniques and have printed and saved several different methods when I've seen them on the Internet. I found, though, that I actually prefer working with the whole quilt. It's not so much a matter of getting the quilt into the right place without drag as it is a matter of my brain knowing what it wants to do. I'm working on quilting the "Reducing my Stash" string quilt right now. It's 103" x 106" and I'm doing it as a whole quilt. So far, it's going pretty well, but the kind of quilting I'm doing on it probably isn't what I'm going to want for this BOM quilt.

That link shows the back side of the quilt while it's still in progress. (That furry gray QI is the reason I ended up taking a photo instead of quilting!)

That link sort of shows what it looks like from the front.

This style is very informal and loose and I don't think the BOM quilt will look right in this style.

What a neat 'trip' of watching the progress (and the cat's determination that it will be HER quilt!) I never would have thought of a TATW pattern for a string quilt.

It's amazing what a person will do to use up old stash to justify purchasing new stash!!

Thanks, Chipper and Donna! This is the second year in a row I've done the RCTQ BOM. I think I may have to skip next year to give myself time to finish the other works-in-progress!

If this gets answered twice, my apologies. This came through while I was watching the coverage of the storm damage in downtown Atlanta and I was a little "shaken." I kept wondering which of my basketball-loving friends were there in that awful mess. I thought I answered this, but it's not showing up this morning.

Anyway, I'm not sure what made me decide to lay out the string quilt the way I did. Since the quilt had no purpose other than for me to play, reduce stash, and give a venue for practicing free-motion quilting without worrying about it, it really didn't matter. The cat does the same thing with every quilt I make. They are all hers!

I love your string quilting!! I have your picture bookmarked for inspiration - I have been meaning to do a string quilt for some time.

And a technique question: I see that you were using paper from an old phone book as foundation. - how easy/hard was that to rip out? (Ripping off paper after foundation piecing is my least favorite part of the process)
