Wow oh Wow oh Wow Did I get a GEM!!!!

This is anotherfellow's photos of my new SM. It's the only reference to my machine Ifound online. Via a short conversation with him, I found that it's aMontgomery Ward (I thought they only sold Signature SM's) and that itprobably is from the 50s or maybe very, very early '60s. I sat down and started playing with the machine. It's clean as a whistle, goes devil fast, sews the prettiest straight and zig zag stitches I've ever seen. It's so heavy that my big, strong 18-year-old was surprised by the weight. I can just lift it off the floor, not much higher.

The works are all steel. Everything. And so well kept. I realized after looking at it a long time that the black marks are reminders of how to thread the machine. The "extras" are pretty nice. It's got a "drop feed dogs" knob on the front. And I realized that with the feed dogs down and the presser foot all the way up, I can hoop fabric and FM to my heart's content. I've never used a machine that's so easy to FM. I'm not making this up. Even in zigzag mode.

I can't believe what fortune brought me. For $20 I have a machine that easily could cost ten times that. And it's incredibly physically beautifully to boot. I doubt it will take a walking foot, but haven't tried yet. It's just a fabulous machine. And the name isn't Jewel. It's a "Montgomery Ward 7 Jewel Automatic Zig Zag Machine". How's that for a mouthful?

If any of you see a manual for a MW automatic zig zag, please let me know. I really would like to have one.

Going downstairs to have some fun, Sunny

Goodness, Sunny, that SM looks like it would sew through a 2x4! I can't believe how clean and shinny it is...doesn't even look like it was used.

It looks like a standard low shank machine, so a off the shelf low shank walking foot will work on it.

Does it have a number stampped anywhere on the base? Many of the old MW/Signature machines model numbers start with "UHT."

It's gorgous and looks like a lot of fun...and what a great price. Congratulations!

Looks like the horizontal lever is stitch width, knock that down to zero and it should be straight. It looks similar to my mum's machine, which doesn't have separate modes, straight is just zig zag with no width.

Looks 'slightly' different than the one you posted but if you scroll down to the other images it says on the cover "Wards 7 Jewel" Automatic Zig Zag..................

Hope that helps a bit.

actually now that I look at the other manuals available for MW and the other pictures in the album you posted.

The link for the manual I posted above is identical to the picture you posted with the exception of 2 badges. Everything else, dials, knobs etc is identical. (well from what you can tell in the pics)

Tammy, thank you! This is the right manual and I'm ordering it immediately. Although, this is a really simple little machine and in the hours I've spent since yesterday I think I've figured just about everything out. What I don't know is where and how often to oil. That makes the purchase of the owner's guide well worth it.

Wheeeeeeeeeee

What a cool looking machine! It looks like it was designed by Cadillac

- even has the little crown on the logo.

All it really needs is fins!

I found "Jewel" at the local senior center thrift shop. I go there to look for fabric some times. You can always find good quality (sturdy) cotton solids. And lots of lace and stuff like that. All dirt cheap. I was walking through yesterday killing time while my friend had her blood pressure check (we were going to lunch) and I happened to see the case pushed into the corner under some other things. Baskets and the like. I asked one of the volunteers there if I could see if she ran and got disgusted looks -- par for the course there. They volunteer but don't want to actually do anything. So I dragged it to the front -- it's so heavy I can't lift it very well -- and plugged it in and bought a 30 cent piece of fabric to test it on. It purred right into action. I messed with it a little bit and could tell I had a winner. The marked price was $40, and the shop has everything in it half off the marked price all the time. Don't ask me why they do that, would make more sense to just mark everything cheaper. Anyway, I got it to the car and took it home and had one of my sons carry it downstairs and now Jewel is installed in my sewing room.

This is so exciting. I can't believe I found such a gem.

How lucky you were! I sometimes get really good deals on fabric from the local Goodwill store but never once saw a sewing machine there. What is a senior center thrift shop? Is that a private place or all over?

whereas at Goodwill, I've never seen fabric, but they do seem to have a place for sewing machines - not in the craft section, somewhere in the electricals section.

I'm curious about this senior centre thrift store too, I think Sunny is in vaguely the same urban area as me and I had heard mention of such a thing somewhere, but have not enough details to locate it!

Most cities and towns of any size have a Senior Center -- a place where folks of a certain age go to find other folks of a certain age. Most of these centers receive grants and United Way funds and such so they provide activities for older people. Dance lessons, aerobics for older folks, lunch is served at reduce prices, just all sorts of things that I can't think of. Many have a quilting group. Bridge or dominos or other games usually meet.... just about everything you can think of. And most of them let other groups use a space in their building (if they have a free standing building).

The Senior Center in Wenatchee has its own thrift store. People donate just about anything you can think of. This one is really well run. They even have racks of greeting cards for really cheap and books, clothes, and they have a big craft section. I find fabric there frequently, although most of what they have runs to polyester (not that there's anything wrong with Polly Ester ). This time I just happened to walk into an incredible bit of luck. Somebody obviously donated the SM and I saw it before anybody else. Although, from the looks of the price tag it had been there for a bit of time.

Anne, where are you?? I'm east of the Cascades. Would love to get over the mountains to thrift shop the West side, but we just don't go to Seattle unless absolutely necessary.

We're in Bellevue, but knowing the way people round here travel, or get away at the weekends, something in Wenatchee could well have been spoken about as "local".

I'll have to dig a bit more, the Bellevue Goodwill is mixed, I was able to get a good crock pot their, but they have no craft books, no fabric of any sort and I've only ever seen very poor condition sewing machines. On the other hand I have bought almost unused childrens shoes for a couple of dollars!
