Brush with fame

Have any of you gotten the new book _The Quilter's Catalog_ by Meg Cox yet? It's really wonderful though I would call it an encyclopedia or compendium rather than a catalog. It covers quilting from seemingly every angle - on-line, art quilts, men who quilt, antique quilts and on and on.

Then, what did I see in the section on fabric dyeing? A quote (and a very nice and lengthy one at that) from our very own fabric tramp, Kathy Applebaum! So fun. Check her out on p. 217. You can say "hey, I know her!"

That's on my list of books to buy. I'll have to look up where to get one.

Marcella, thanks for mentioning this! I hadn't even heard of this book, but now I'll keep my eyes open for it. :)

It would have been awfully nice if they'd asked for my permission (which I would have given). Hmpf.

I didn't tell you because this is the first I've heard of it. No one asked my permission to use stuff I'd written or even bothered to tell me they were using it without permission. I would have gladly given permission, but I am a bit miffed that they used stuff without asking.

Never heard of her before. I've only taught two classes on dyeing, and I personally know every student who attended, so she didn't take a class from me. (Good thought, though!)

I'm sure it was a search. About the only excuse she could have is if what she took was from back when I was with Compuserve, which is an e-mail address that no longer works. I don't *think* I was hand dyeing that long ago, but I'm not 100% sure. (which is one reason I'd like to see the text she printed, so I can find out what e-mail address was with it by searching for it myself). Otherwise, my current e-mail addy would have been with any post, either here, mirrors of here, or on my web site.

Well, I am just stunned that Kathy's quote was printed without her knowledge or permission. Now it makes me wonder about all the quotes - and the book is mostly quotes from quilters in different fields - and if they were printed under the same circumstance. When I read it I thought that she had either corresponded with the author or filled out some sort of survey/informational e-mail query thing. I'd seen some floating around various quilting groups. Guess I was seriously wrong. Phooey, kind of takes the excitement out of it all.

Here I was all happy to have seen Kathy quoted and th> Maybe Marcella can holler back with the passage ... considering that it's

Here it is:

'"I got into quilting because I love color and texture, so hand dyeing was a natural extension for me," says Kathy Applebaum an art quilter from Woodland, California. "Once I started hand dyeing, the fact that I'm never one hundred percent sure of what the final product will be has kept me dyeing. Actually, hand dyeing led me to make art quilts. I started in the traditional world, but then those big hunks of hand dyed fabrics just begged to become whole-cloth quilts. Now I make seventy-five percent art quilts and mostly make traditional quilts when my guild does them for charity."'

'Like many quilters, Applebaum keeps experimenting with new techniques as she goes along, each one leading her to be more adventuresome. "In the four years I've been dyeing, I progressed from dyeing in buckets and baggies to using squirt bottles and shaving cream. I've added scrunching and tying to my repertoire, as well as multiple colors. I'm toying with the idea of adding stamping. Who knows?"' _The Quilter's Catalog_ pp.217-218

I wouldn't let her get away with it, if it were me. At the very least, I'd post a review on Amazon to let other people know how she "authored" her book!

Thanks for posting the quote -- good old Google Desktop helped me track it down.

Apparently three years ago (!) the author posted to the Quilt Art list asking for stories from people who are passionate about hand dyeing, and the quote is from my public response to her there. I'd say this one comes down to a lack of communication -- I now see she had several previous posts saying what she was doing, but it's a high volume list (and it WAS quite a while ago), so I didn't make the connection. My apologies for getting folks here in a tizzy.

Does seem like her marketing folks missed a chance by not e-mailing people who are in the book. The local newspaper makes darn sure they let you know when your name will be in it, for good or bad, because they know you'll buy a copy either way. *grin*
