Oops I did it again?

Look at what I got for free from some lady at a yard sale today. She said it will cost about $150 to fix the motor because it appears to not be working right.

The machine has NEVER been cleaned and NEVER been oiled! I don't know how bad the damage is but when my father in law gets here in August I will get him to look at it and let me know. (He is a sewing machine tech who worked for a Singer shop for MANY years and works on all kinds of machines. He LOVES the old tough ones lol)

It came in its original case, with all the original books and a bout 12 different feet and all the bells and whistles! It is the deluxe version of my kind of a burger I guess! lol I haven't been this intrigued for a long time about my sewing. Not that it is anywhere new or useful at this moment, but she is a beauty.

She is also unique because she has no gas pedal, as my husband called it. It has a knee control and oh how I love it! I learned to sew on a Elna with a knee control and I missed that machine when it went to machine heaven. It was my mothers very first sewing machine and one of the first things she ever purchased brand new when she was about 16 years old. It was a treasure. (moment of silence in memory here? LOL)

I cant wait to play with her pintuck, her ruffler, her blind hemmer, rolled hemmer, cording foot, button holer, and all the other goodies !!! I think though, it is missing....... the walking foot (insert sad face here) but it does have quilting attachments like the little spacer arm thingy!!

Ok can you tell I am excited and possibly motivated??

Does anyone else here own a Goldie Oldie Bernina 731??

That's darling !!!...Lucky you...I've always wondered if they weigh as much as my 930 which seems to weigh a ton...nothing I"d ever bring to a class just because of the weight but a wonderful machine .

Yahoo has a Thirty Something group for those Berninas...

730---830---930....etc...Anything you need to know ..there is someone to help you. Also, many people there have the 730s.

Oh my goodness it is a HEAVY sucker! Not a very portable machine in that sense for sure. I almost dropped it when I first picked it up!

Oh and I got it running!!! The poor thing had never been cleaned or oiled. It was dry as a popcorn fart and full of lint but once it got a great dose of oil and some help to make it move, it purrs along like a new one. It is so much quieter than my Kenmore machines! Even my brand new serger is a beast in comparison in sound.

So, for a freebie it is a piece of gold.

Thank you for the info as well. I am off to check it out now!

OH, YEAH BABY!!!!!!! I LOVE mine so much that, if my apartment were to catch on fire my rescue priorities would be Scotty (dog) Isabelle (cat) Bernina and Babylock Embellisher (one tucked under each arm!)

Poor Harri (boyfriend) would have to fend for himself!!! Well, he'd be busy rescuing his powertools anyway!

What a great find, KK! My mother has a 717, which is about the same vintage, but not TOL, and a flatbed. It's a very good, solid machine. I borrowed it for zig-zag sewing before I got my 817. Have fun with it. Lee (real server is memlane)

That looks a lot like the Bernina my mother bought in 1967, except hers was not a free arm and it was in a cabinet. I hope you like yours better than I liked Mom's, though that was probably just because it was not different than sewing on my own machine, which I really liked. Mom's did have a foot control, not a knee control. I wonder if any machines had a walking foot back then?

I don't remember seeing walking or even feed attachments until well into the '70s. People learned to control the feed of the fabric and used the pressure foot pressure control a lot.

What a treasure! I see from further down the thread that you got it moving. Well done!

I recently got given a Bernina 1005! It needs a new foot control (it goes FAAAST but refuses to go S L O W!!)
