Sewing machine question

A friend of mine has a Singer, model #9410. She is having a problem with her foot control and I told her that I would ask here.

When she is sewing and pressing on the foot control, it all of a sudden loses power and it is pushed all the way to the floor. When she takes her foot off of it and lets it "rest" for a minute then it will work again. Only to have it happen again.

Any ideas or suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else who has this machine?

oh oh, me me, i had this happen yrs ago. mine is also a singer, if that means anything. i took my pedal apart and cleaned the parts where the connection takes place. it was a bit tricky aka time consuming but it is do-able. iirc, they do get dirty/dusty over time, then just dont work. my singer isnt a new computer controlled type, just an old touch and sew. that is my only idea and could well be something completely different. jeanne

Is she sewing on a hard surface or carpeting? I sometimes have that problem when my pedal slips off the chair mat onto the carpet... As soon as it is back on the hard surface mat... I'm good to go!

Stomp. Yes, right. That's what I said. I remember asking DH one time what he'd recommend. He said it was reasonable to expect fuzzy stuff could be in the connections and a good stomp or two would jar them loose. Actually he says 'pump it up and down' a few times and see if that helps. If not, then you'll have to do the serious open it up and remove the, what was Kate D's funny word this week? gak? Polly

I have a Bernina, and this has happened to me. The connections in the foot pedal are not connecting properly. Maybe she can take it apart and clean it out (lint maybe?), but it is possible that she needs a new foot pedal. I purchased a new foot pedal for my machine :-)

MMM........I dont think this should be ignored Cindy. Possible fire hazzard if there is a short in the foot. I had one (my Featherweight) with the same problem. It went snap crackle pop one day and smoke came out of the foot.. It was not repairable after that happened, I had to buy a replacement.

You say it looses power...does the motor slow down?=20

If not, the belt may need replacing.

If not there may be a problem with the foot controller or wiring. It should be checked or replaced.

ANother possibility is the motor brushes need replacing.

I'm with Lisa. This could be an electrical problem that is causing overheating which could lead to bigger trouble. As such, it may not be the foot but the motor. With that said, it's free to open the foot and check for lint. If cleaning that doesn't correct the problem it should be serviced by a technician.
