3 Feb. BOMs finished

I chose three of the five blocks Elly suggested for February. I did the Red Cross Block #2 but used my pencil and ruler to make paper foundations so that it would make a 12 1/2" unfinished block. I did the paper-pieced version of Whirling Star 2. I struggled my way through the Crocus Wreath applique. My points are getting much better but my tiny circles are far from round, even though I basted around the edges and pulled them over a plastic template and ironed the shape. The small size was just hard to work with.

Those are...well...how do I put this politely? GORGEOUS! Yep, I had to yell it at the top of my capital letters! I'm loving those blocks Carole!

Your blocks are lovely, Carole and your tiny circles look wonderful. My best success with little round appliqué comes with using dimes for pressing templates. If I ever take the notion to do anything smaller, we'll have to shake down this group and see who has a coin that's smaller. Then, too, some fabrics are better natured about curving appliqué. If you are ever inspired to take on a quilt top that has a massive amount of tiny round appliqué, you might want to audition several fabrics to see which one cooperates the best. Polly

I agree!!! They are pretty -- I love your fabric choices! Who will be the lucky beneficiary of this quilt? If you're not sure.... I'll be happy to "store it" for you while you decide!

Carole they are simply beautiful. I think that's my favourite trio of all you have done. I get excited now when I see the header that I know means they are your blocks. I am loving this quilt - in fact I'm sure we're all getting as much pleasure out of it as you are (well, almost, perhaps!!) . In message , Carole-Retired and Loving It writes

Thank you all! I wonder if I can remember well enough to reply to several posts in one answer. (Probably not!)

Danielle, thank you for "yelling" about my blocks. You're allowed to yell words like "gorgeous." :)

Polly, I can assure you I won't be making any quilts with lots of little circles smaller than dimes, which these were. With hindsight, I think my other gold fabric is a bit softer and would've probably worked better, but I'm not about to do this block over again!!!!

Kate G., this quilt is being made specifically for my brother and his wife, who noted rather plaintively last year that although I had made quilts for several family members, they didn't have one yet. I told them it was because I was waiting to see the color scheme of their bedroom in their new house! So I made the trip to see them and their house, took note of their colors, stopped at Mary Jo's fabrics in Gastonia, NC, on my way home, and bought most of the fabrics that I'm using in this quilt. I did supplement with a few more later on.

Amy, I'm anxious to see pictures of your blocks! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one doing this project and that Elly is going to all this work choosing blocks just for me.

Patti, thanks. I AM enjoying making these blocks and just hope it looks okay after I quilt it. My free-motion quilting is still in the learning phase but I sure can't afford to have anyone else quilt it for me.

As always- you are sooooooo good with choosing fabrics for gorgeous color combinations with such lovely soft contrast. And your piecing and applique are so precise. Great job- as always, too!

Sandy, never in a million years would I expect someone to compliment my appliqué. The whole process just drives me crazy. Nevertheless, I'm being persistent and I do seem to be improving. Of course the crocus wreath had no inside angles, for which I was very thankful!

Jean (Jeanne? I can NEVER remember which way you spell it!!!!), thanks. I'm actually going to put 30 blocks together, and I'll have some left over. I have no idea yet which ones I will use!

Leslie, I'm getting better at precise piecing but I think my appliqué has a way to go before you could call it precise. You ought to see those little yellow circles up close! :)

hey Carole, its Jeanne(french spelling, no french blood tho, go figure what my mom was thinking) and its the english pronunciation, like the old song...I Dream of Jeanne with the light brown hair.

anyhow. as your applique are flowers from nature, i never th> Sandy, never in a million years would I expect someone to compliment

And, with a washer, you often (usually?) have a hole in the middle so that you can anchor it wile sewing with the washer still in! Great idea, Kate. Hardware stores are going to think there is an epidemic of leaky taps/faucets when everyone gets round to doing that crocus appliqué >g< . In message , Kate G. writes

Estelle, thanks! It's nice to know that other people are happy with my fabrics and their colors.

Jeanne (now I have to think Jeannie in my head 'cause that's the way it would be spelled around here,) I agree that there's a lot of variation in nature, both colors and shapes. That's a good thing because my appliqué will certainly match up to that! Glad mine is making you happy!!!

I've just seen them - they're lovely. I also like the applique flowers with the tiny circles best. Great choice for a BOM, but I wouldn't want to do a whole quilt of them.

Oh no, I'm NOT ready for March. I'm making a king-sized string quilt and I'm in the process of sewing together all 120 blocks to make the top. I'd love to get that top together, layered, and pinned before the March blocks!!!
