Another punch question

So, to see what all the fuss was about with punches, I bought one today. A star. And, well, I thought it would be like, you punch the paper and you get a star, but instead of punching it out nice and clean, it sort of tears it and I get a shape that's somewhat like a star, but all torn and mangled. Is that what it's supposed to do?

Oh no I'd take it back and exchange it. Now after a while they will get dull and that will happen and I've heard cutting a few times with aluminum foil will help with that. If it's new I wouldn't put up with that.

It should punch cleanly. Take it back and exchange it for one that works.

Well, they come all wrapped up in plastic. How do I know another one will work better? I bought it where I work, and we don't even take back things if they're opened anyway.

Try punching some stars out of aluminum foil. I've also heard you can use wax paper the same way, but I can't remember if that's to sharpen or what. I may be wrong about the wax paper, though. Definately try the foil since you can't take it back.

they are required by law to exchange broken stuff... "just because I didn't like it" they don't have to accept but broken they do. They can get in trouble if they don't. Also, find out the manufacturer.. complain to them and they usually make it right (unless its not a know manufacturer.. which is why I spend the money (and save coupons) to get ek sucess or another well known companies stuff... only problem I ever had was with fiskars).

This one is a Provo Craft one. I expected it to work well. Maybe I'm being too picky? I mean, is it supposed to make a perfect edge, look machine done, or what? Because regular office hole punchers never do either, in my experience.

Michelle,

That is so disappointing and no it shouldn't have happened. I bought two different punches at Michaels that didn't work. One of them was Provo Craft, it actually came out of the plastic packaging in pieces and the other was a set of alphabet punches a-z lower case in a blue trimmed see-through bag and they all worked except the N. The N would chop itself in half everytime despute the use of foil. I couldn't get them to take them back. They assumed I'd broken them that very same day! Really sucked. But you should just talk to your supervisor or friendly cashier who knows you and maybe the'll help you out. It's kinda hard to excite customers about what you're selling when your experience was negative with that program. Good luck. I have a lot of punches and those are the only two times I've had problems. I like thumb punches the best as they're easiest to use (in my opinion.) Good luck!

No They aren't. I owned a gift shop for years and it may be a law in some states but its not a Federal law nor is it a state law in all states. You just have to check with your states attorney general. Now if you bought it on a credit card they must exchange it, give you a refund or a store credit UNLESS they have a posted policy that differs from that. That IS a Federal Law and if they don't make good on it you can call your cc company for help. That's why I buy everything on a cc and then send my cc company a check right away so my balance doesn't get out of hand.

If all that fails contact the company that made the products. Usually they will help you out but I would suggest you not tell them that two of them failed on the same day unless by some awful chance they are from the same company. If they are you don't have any choice. If you can't find their phone number post their info here and someone should be able to help you.

Well, firstly it seems that this group is once again succeeding as wonderful enablers...so...just a word of congrats to each and everyone of you! LOL Then secondly Luna, no, none of my punches do that. I have about 5 in different sizes. It sounds like the blades must be blunt. I would return it if I were you.

Provo Craft is even known over here in SA, so I think they should do propper cutting. I would contact the manufacturer and see what happens.

If your job doesn't let an employee return a defective product, I surely wouldn't want to shop there at all. I wouldn't want to work there either, to be honest. Where I work, we bend the rules slightly for employees and although there are items we don't refund or exchange if it is proven it simply just isn't working the way it should, we will exchange it for anyone. Employee or customer. Tell the manager you want one that works right.

I've been reading this thread and wasn't going to reply because anything I would say has already been said. I just remembered though that I bought a jumbo punch from Michaels a couple/three yrs back and returned it w/out any good reason. It was perfectly fine. I don't remember, I prolly told them it was a gift. You have a good reason, it's faulty. I have several punches and only one is raggedy when I use it. It's a super cheap fancy corner punch. Don't even remember where it came from. In my experience not every store is the same an they prolly ould take back something faulty.

PS: I've also been known to try out punches before I buy it. I'll punch those pads for testing the pens or even one of the ad signs. If I have a flyer w/ me I'll use that.
