Thanks for asking! I spoke to Faye last night via cell phone to check on them and to wish Faye a Happy Birthday (today). She and the kids are still at her parents home in AL but her DH had to go back to Ft Walton Beach. They had some damage to their home but we THINK it was only to the lanai, pool and one pine tree that will need to be cut down. Her DH had not had a chance to get on the roof to check that out. Unfortunately they have one family in their squadron that has lost everything and as Squadron Commander and wife, Keith and Faye will be the primary ones trying to help get these people back on their feet. Lets hope and pray that there was sufficient insurance to cover what they lost. Heaven knows they will have been through enough without a lack of insurance! I'll let her know you asked about her. Last time Irene posted was on the 1st of September. She said she was too sick to leave and that her mother was too ill to travel and she wasn't going to leave her. She said she would post when everything was over. She lives in the Northwest Panhandle of Florida...what was the damage in that area?

My in-laws live in Panama City and they still do not have power. They didn't have any damage- trees down in the neighborhood here and there but they were in the same section of P.C. that one of the tornados hit. That might be why Irene hasn't checked in?

My stepsister is in Pensacola and they rode out the hurricane. She ended up with a lot of downed trees and no power, water, gas, sewer. My dad went out to get her kids because they are saying it will be 2-3 weeks before they can get the bulk of the power restored. Paper said there are over 800 miles of lines down. I also have a friend in Foley AL and I haven't heard from her either. I hope everyone is okay!!

The only time I have ever heard the word lanai used was by Blanche on the Golden Girls. Just out of curiosity is this the common way that those down south refer to a porch?

signed Northern girl who until 2 minutes ago thought the only place the word lanai was used was on TV.

P.S. I don't know Faye but I am glad to hear your friend is okay and will pray for the family in their squadron.

Must be a Florida thing. I grew up in Louisiana and have lived in Georgia. Like you, the only time I ever heard a porch called a lannai was on Golden Girls!

My parents live IN Mobile...not "near Mobile, but actually IN the city of Mobile and they chose to not evacuate. In addition, my grandmother (just turned 85 on Sunday) called them for a ride out of town and found out they were staying (she also lives in Mobile) so she went to their house. No lanai there, BUT... The carriage port and house are fine while the fence and guest house (formerly a slave quarters when the house was built 100+ years ago) are both totalled. My parents home is historically significant, according to the City of Mobile. They have a plaque on the front and only pay $199 in property taxes each year even though the house value is well over $400K. The "catch" is that the house has to stay the way it was originally. They can't change anything major, but there is indoor plumbing and electricity and phones (built before any of that existed). So, now they are wondering if they will lose this since the slave quarters is gone. They are hoping that they are able to rebuild it and it would still "count" since it was a storm. It wasn't like they just up and decided to flatten it. If they lose the historical element, their taxes will go up to about $10K/yr. They didn't even lose a pane of glass in the main house! Oh, and they STILL don't have electricity. They said they've been seeing a LOT of movies! LOL The temp has been in the 90's so they go see a movie and the manager allows them to plug their laptop in (to charge battery) while both cell phones charge in the car.

When I was in Hawaii they called their porch or balcony a lanai. So, I thought you had to be able to see some palm trees for it to qualify as a lanai. :) I just checked and I CAN see a palm tree from my patio it has officially been changed to a lanai!

A Lanai is typically a screened in porch area. In Faye's case it also cages in their pool.

Thanks for the prayers for Faye and the Squadron of families. We all appreciate it!

I'm so sorry to hear of the damage to your parents home however I am thankful they were not injured or worse. Keep us posted on how they are doing. S

significant,

I never thought about how destruction from the storm could effect tax breaks for those living in historic homes. Unfortunately they will probably lose the tax break, rebuilding it probably won't qualify because it would not be original.

We lost electricity for 5 days about 17 years ago when some major thing blew and they had to dig it up and then replace it but the code now specified that it be encased in a certain thickness of concrete. The weird thing was half the neighborhood had electricity and half didn't. Thank goodness we had good neighbors who invited the kids over to watch TV and then ran extension cords all over the neighborhood so those without would at least have the refrigerator and wouldn't have to sit in the dark. I think we went to the movies everynight during that time, it was really hot and the theater was air conditioned.

Just so you know there are still places in foley, al that dont have power yet. And there was some major damage but nothing like penscola got. They were on the east side of the eye so that is why they got the worst of it. As for me, I live just outside of the city limits of foley and we had power here as of friday. But I have some friends staying with me that live near downtown that dont have it due to all the power lines that are still down near their home. If you would like me to look up your friend let me know and I will see what I can find out for you.
