Glueing long strips?

I'm making a set of 24 tags for a swap (actually 12 sets of two) and I thought it would be neat to make an overlapping background of narrow patterned paper strips... I was using my xyron stickermaker but I got five strips glued down and then I ruined the next four because they wouldn't go through the machine straight, and the last one broke the cartridge for good measure! Argh... I took a break to reconsider my options, because my immediate reaction was a strong desire to throw the whole project out the window and give up!

How do you glue long skinny strips down when they're going to be cut across the grain so they have to be thoroughly stuck on?

I dont know if this will help you or not, but I kind of had that problem when I tried the serendipity technique. I had to use glue all over the whole piece to glue all the pieces down, and let it thoroughly dry before cutting. I put a new blade on my cutter, and it worked okay.

I wonder if Dry Bond would work? I have seen it on QVC. its a rub-on adhesive. I have no idea how good it holds. A friend of mine uses it for ribbon and long strips. HTH Linda

Have you considered spray glue? I don't have a brand name for you, but I know you can find it in most craft sections.

Glue tape? Can make it as long as you want. Easy to apply.

Have you tried running thicker strips through the Xyron then cut them to the size needed? I find that's easier.

I've only got the baby xyron machine... it works great for letters and tiny little things, but not so great for strips... I managed to break the cartridge in my efforts (the plastic liner pulled right out of the felted guide it's meant to run through!) so I ended up pulling the now-useless cartridge out of the machine and then I realised that I could still use the sticky bits and without any waste! I put the sticky paper down on my backing sheet and cut it to length, then pressed the glue on and pulled the waxed sheet off and then layed the strips onto it and voila... I was done in five minutes instead of twenty-five!

I like gluetapes and I've got a bunch of them... but the problem with this was that I needed the glue to go all over the strips because I wanted to cut the finished sheet on the diagonal and I knew there'd be lots of little 'bits' of paper involved... in the end the tags looked really cute but you'd never guess how much of a pain in the neck they were to make! I've almost finished but I've run out of heart brads and the vision in my head says that I MUST HAVE THEM! So I've put the tags aside for a week until I can go shopping again...
