I smashed my rotary paper-trimmer :(

I'd just finished making some cards and I accidentally knocked it off the table onto the tiles and the plastic smashed to smitherenes! It's sad but not hideously tragic because it's about five years old and the blade was blunt and the cutting strip needed replacing again and I hadn't got around to getting either. John says I can buy a new one whenever I want because it's an essential tool... so my question is, which one should I get?

This one was made by Carls and I loved it - it's a small, compact

12-inch trimmer and the only disadvantage to it was that it didn't have much of a measuring guide, so I eyeballed everything. I got one of the large Fiskars ones on Ebay and so I use that if measurement is essential (now I'm getting used to how it works I like it, but it's definitely not portable).

I need something compact that I can take to crops... what do you suggest?

Here's the one that smashed -

Creative Express has the Zision paper trimmer and scissor kit on sale for $17 and I'm tempted to get that just to get the four pairs of neat little scissors in a carrying case... but is the trimmer any good?

Or should I try a cutterpede?

Hi Karen, I have the 12 inch Fiskars paper trimmer. Though it's compact and convenient, it doesn't always cut straight. There is a trimmer out there from (I think) Cutterbee (spelling?) that is supposed to cut straight and is about the same size as the Fiskars 12 inch trimmer. It's a sea green color. I was thinking about purchasing it but haven't yet. I have seen it at Wal-Mart for either $17 or $24 (I can't remember) I have also seen it at AC Moore for about the same price.

Hope this helps. Brandi

I love using my cutterpede, but don't normally take it to crops as it is too long to stand in my crop bag and it will only fit in the bottom box of my stacking tool box (remember my tool box at the barn???) I only take the tool box if I'm going to an all day crop...otherwise it's too much trouble to take. For 3-4 hour crops I take my fiskar. I know it doesn't always have a straight cut, but if you make your cuts slow, use a sharp blade, and keep your hand up as you cut it will do a pretty good job. Sandy

I love my Cutterbee! I had a Fiskars and it wasn't worth it to me. I am verrrry particular about straight lines. I got mine at Hobby Lobby (on sale) of course. I couldn't talk myself out of it. It was down to like $12 at the time (from like $24), so I even got an extra blade. :-)

Yes, it's a bit bigger than the other cutters, but to me it's worth it. I jsut have to pack it right and it works out.

I personally love my Fiskers cutter. It's not the cheaper plastic one. It's got the metal plate on it, and a arm that swings out for measureing. I can't remember what Fiskars calls it, though. I like it lots though. I take it to crops or whatever.

I would try out the Fiskars or the Cutterpede and see which one you like the best. Most LSS's have them in stock and would probably let you try it out.

I love my Fiskar's too and I didn't know it had a swing out arm for about a year. When I found it .... it was like I had a whole new tool to use. Reminds me of the time my girl friend didn't know the other side of her Barbie house opened up. While running to my house carrying the Barbie house she dropped it and it popped open. She thought she had a whole new toy. :D

I've never had my cutterpede cut straight! I've even changed blades, green cutting strips. LSS didn't know what was wrong with it. They said I could take it back, but I never did. I found a cheepie at Dollar General to get me by. I was thinking about getting one from creative memories. It cuts clean and the blade is very sharp. something that the cutterpede wasn't. It felt dull and didn't cut cleanly. It left fuzzies on all of the edges like it was torn instead of cut. I was not happy with it at all.

The thing I don't like about the dollar general one is that the 'arm' on any of the others doesn't raise up. My paper is slightly bigger than 12x12 and I have to make it fit to cut it. I don't like doing that because it mars up the edges. I need to get a different one soon.

I have the Fiskars euro and rotary trimmer, an exacto trimmer and the zision. The fiskars euro is my first choice because it is the easiest to find replacement blades for. The zision cuts nicer and the blade seems to last longer than the fiskars ones but I have to order replacements online as the local stores do not carry them.

Finally someone who actually has a Zision! I was starting to wonder if it actually existed :P

I have the Zisons and I HATE it!!! It cuts card stock or heavier paper just fine but thinner of patterened paper just tears. I've tried changing blades, cutting fast, cutting slow but nothing helps it was definately a waste! The cutterpede works great but isn't as easy to transport. I use it at home in my craft room but to go to crops ect. I'll stay with my old gray 12" fiskers anyday! If you don't push really hard and use a sharp blade they do just fine! JM2C Barb:o)

I'm with you Barb!....I bought the Zision and although it cuts straighter than Fiskars...it furs up the edge of the papers. Cardstock cuts fine but the blades seem to blunt quick and are not easy to find. I got round the furry edges by using a sanding block.

Now I have resorted to using a steel rule, cutting mat and a sharp craft knife. I am sick of wasting good money on all these cutting tools that don't really "cut it" :o) I have heard negative comments on them all!!! My best cutter buy was a little cutter I bought in Poundland for £1 that fits in a ringbinder and I use for card-making and quick mats. For scrapbooking I recently invested in the large Anna Griffin cutting mat with all the angles marked and I am loving it. If I need to cut loads at once I will get out my guillotine cutter...heavy...but cuts straight every time!
