Just cause I'm excited...not sure if it is OT or an AD... + need advice on restoring pictures

This morning I got an early morning call from one of the Ruby directors that I met at the TLC mini convention last weekend (she isn't in my upline) BTW, I forgot tp tell you all that me, M-C, who never wins anything actually won 2 door prizes out of maybe 7 last weekend! I was so excited. Anyhow, looks like I'm a winner again. This lady asked if I would like to help her vendor at the very big crop and sale! I've never even been to one of those!!! I am so excited, I'm busting at the seams. Well I'm not really busting at the seams cause I've lost 20 lbs in the last 7 weeks and I'm down one size and just about to go down another!!!!! I don't know if any of you have ever been to this crop it's called the K.I.S.S. Crop-n-Shop Scrapbook Events. According to their website it's 2 full days of shopping, 26 hours of cropping time, over 28 hours of education and an unlimited amount of FUN!!! It's on October 28th and 29th, 2005 in Joplin, MO and I'll be there!!! Woo Hoo!!! (Their website is

) Anyhow if you've ever been, I'd love to hear about your experience there! On a sadder note, this morning I got a box full of soggy albums and nasty smelling pictures that were salvaged from my MIL's home. Strangely enough, the album that I mde for her wedding a couple of years ago wasn't in the box. I'm going to have to ask her what happened to it as I was under the impression that it was damaged. I am hoping that one of you can tell me how to deal with a black and white picture that is completely stuck to the glass. I took it out of the frame but there is no way to get it off the glass, I'm thinking that the only way is to wet it again. It is all buckled and warped. I scanned it as is, but it would be better if I could get it off the glass and flattened out again. There are also a couple of colored 8x10 of her wedding to Rick's dad (taken sometime in the early or mid 60s) that are stuck to the plastic that covered them in her wedding album. On top of that there are a number of plane tickets, newspaper clippings and receipts as well as cards and even the pages where her guests signed her weddding book and other pages with the list of the gifts she got that I have to figure what to do with. Do I just scan and reprint them, try to salvage them and get the smell out of them and put them back into another book, what? Suggestions are truly welcomed. None of these are completely without blemish and everything of course smells of mold and mildew and goodness knows what else!

A couple of you have mentionned using a solution that contains 1 tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of water and spraying it on the pictures to stop the moulding and get rid of the germs. Do I do this on the back of the pictures even if they've already dried? (By the way I did take your advice and bought a box of disposable gloves and when I took them off I washed my hands with anti-bacterial soap and since I have a couple of boo-boos I treated those with a first aid creme. )

I've been looking things up on the net, but I can always use the input of others who have either researched this or better still who have actually restored pictures before! I do intend on documenting the whole process for others to get a feel for what had to be done!

Thanks in advance for your help,

M-C...don't know if you have been to this site but there seems to be lots of useful info on water & flood damage, mold, mildew, scanning & restoration. Might be worth a look!

Oh M-C! It sounds like you have quite an exciting time ahead of you! Enjoy! And congrats on the weight loss...are you on some kind of diet?

The only thing I can think of to remove the photo's from the glass and plastic, is steam. Try holding it over the kettle while boiling to loosen them up. I think it will definitely work with the plastic...not to sure about the glass tho! Good Luck!

I can't help you on the ruined pictures M-C. I know it must have broken your heart to see all of them. Didn't we at one time have a lady on the NG that did restoration for a museum? I can't remember who it was..... Perhaps you could contact one of the museums in LR, they might be able to give some advise.

Congrats on the offer for the TLC stuff!!! Sounds like you made an impression on the lady/

Great info on both sites, Marilyn! Who would've thought to put them in the freezer?

Wishing you the best of luck with all of them, M-C. Even tho it's a lot more work, you might consider scanning all of them, even the ones that are in good enough condition to give back. If you keep a copy of them on CD, you MIL's family will at least have the peace of mind that if this happens again (or even just a water leak from a broken pipe), their memories will still be preserved & they can get them back.

Keep us posted on how the project's going.

Alicia

P.S. And congratulations on the door prizes & getting to work the Crop-n-Shop. Have fun!

That was what I thought Alicia! I certainly wouldn't have thought about the freezer either...LOL

I actually did try undo. In the end, the photo had to be soaked in cold water and pried off. It really is a goner I'm afraid, though I do intend on sending it to Shaun to see what he can do with it!

Please do all continue to keep the ideas coming!

Thanks, M-C

M-C...here is another link that contains some good information...particularly about safe handling moldy objects.

Please take great care, as you do not know what was in the flood water. You should be working in a cool, well ventilated area, preferably wearing a mask! You know...I don't envy your task but I did wonder if things like scrapbooks, etc. would be covered under home insurance. If they are...wouldn't it be possible to have a professional restoration company recover the photos for your MIL??...then you could re-scrap them for her! Just a thought!

Take care, Marilyn

My mom has a custom photo lab here in Seattle, and they have people bring in stuff like this fairly regularly.

Thank goodness for modern technology though, makes restoration a bit easier.

One thing she would reccomend is to get copy negs of some of the more important pictures - basically this would be a picture of the picture. That way you'd have a new negative. Then, these can be scanned in on high resolution scanners and doctored via photoshop, and printed on high quality paper.

You can call the lab if you like (Much to my chagrin, despite constant urging, they do NOT have a web site)...It's Panda Photgraphic Labs inc.

I'll email you the info.

Good luck!

Thanks Jessica. Is there any reason that I just can't scan the pictures and use those in photoshop to correct and reprint? Just curious about why a negative would be required. Does it make a diference in the quality of the final product?

MC - My mom will know more - but I can tell you that as great as digital is getting, it still doesn't have the fine quality and detail as film does, and where CD's and discs might change, a negative will always be printable.

And, even without a negative, I suggest a proffessional grade scanner, as they often have finer detail than a home scanner.

I don't envy you your task!

Good Luck!

Thanks again, Jessica. I actually have a professional, large bed scanner that I can even copy xrays on.

I'm so excited for you MC! I know you're very honored to be able to partake in the KISS Crop-n-Shop. Hey, and you even get to see MO! LOL

I feel for you in your endeavor to try to redo your MIL's albums. It definately is not going to be easy!
