OT: old license plates

My son have picked out the paint sample that he wanted in his bedroom (deep sea blue - really dark navy blue). I have thought about paint his walls chocolate color but still haven't decide yet. I would love to use the old license plates as borders and use plaid fabric for curtains (I already have enought to make him a twin size quilt). He is 9 yrs old with Asperger's syndrom (very mild case of Autism). He will be 4th grade in Aug. Do you have any ideas on where I can find old license plates?? I would really appreciates! Marcie

My son's room is a really dark blue. He just loves it. He picked out orange sheets. Still haven't gotten or made him any curtains.

Also you can use the king size bath towels for curtains (they have wild color towels out there now).

Maybe you could call a junkyard or scrap yard and see if they have any old license plates. I wonder what the Department of Motor Vehicles does with old ones when they are turned in?

Hi Marcie

That sounds like a lovely boy's room! You should really take pics and give us a look once you are finished.

I don't know if you know, but I live in South Africa. We've got auto scrapyards over here and I'm sure you have the same over there. Perhaps you could have the plates of cars that have been "written off", if the plates are not damaged. I'm sure it won't be expensive. But only if the thought of the car's plates you are using have been in an accident, does not put you off :)) Otherwise there's always ebay...amazing what you can get there!

Garage Sales. Ebay. A TGI Friday's resturant manager might know where his home office gets them.

I love the idea! That sounds like one awesome boys room! If I had old liscense plates on hand, I would gladly send them to you. :-) You could always search ebay, it's amazing what you find there. You might also try craigslist.com and see if there's any there. Who knows, you might even find someone giving them away! Auto junkyards or auto salvage places might have them, too. Several nation-wide restaurants have old license plates in their restaurants, the managers of those might know where they come from? Hmmm...OH! What about antique shops or flea markets?

On a side note, I know a boy who will be going into the 7th or 8th grade in August who was diagnosed with Aspergers and Turrets in the 3rd or 4th grade. He's one of those kids who have a special place in my heart. Working with children in church, hubby and I have met a ton of kids in the last 7 years. We remember a bunch of them, and all of them are special to us, but this one boy just has an even more special place in my heart. He tried so hard to be quiet, because the other kids gave him a hard time if he didn't. I don't know if I had more patience than others or what, but I knew it was difficult for him, and as long as he was trying and made an attempt to even stay near his chair, he was fine. If need be, all I had to do was tell him he needed to tone it down some, and he would. I sure do miss seeing him! This boy described it to me one time as electricity going all through his body. He was a sweet kid, though. I never assumed I could have a hug, I always asked first. Whereas, most of the other kids would simply volunteer a hug.

Okay, enough reminiscing for me. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Marcella, if I happen to come across any old license plates, I will definately let you know!
