not OT: big announcement

Quite awhile back I told you all that I had made ONE quilt in my entire sewing lifetime and said that I would prefer to be impaled on rusty farm implements than to ever make a quilt again. I love RCTQ because I happened to think that this group is not only a font of very useful information, sewing or otherwise, always kind and helpful and full of humor and THE very friendliest in all of Newsgroup land. All you people are just so exceptionally wonderful!! I have from time to time put in my two cents worth when I felt I could be of help or bring a smile.........with that said, here comes the earth shattering announcement........everybody sit down and hang on.......

I'm making a quilt. ~wrapping old wool muffler under chin and around head to hold ice packs on throbbing temples~ Yup, you all read it here. My son is getting married in August. He just sold his house and they bought an old Victorian triplex as an income producing home. There is absolutely nothing this couple needs or doesn't already have or can not afford to buy for themselves. I have wracked my brain for some kind of very special wedding gift, my funds are very limited so there will be "no contest" trying to keep up with the in-laws (who are gifting them with a two week honeymoon in Europe) so I will make them a lovely queen sized quilt ~deep breathing into paper sack and rubbing Polly's little blue Minkee scrap sample on my cheek for soothing, calming comfort~ stitched with love and to go with the theme of their new home. Last night I sat and designed twined hearts that will encompass their names and wedding date and underneath my name and when I made the quilt as their wedding gift. I'll hand embroider that on the back after it is finished instead of making a label.

Wish me luck, send up prayers and stand by for questions, tears, mumbled curses, chocolate, alcohol and moral support.......and last resort ...... rusty farm implements.

Well, um. One of our quilts started out as a "let's use up some oddly assorted scraps and just make some blocks with them" - think it might have been when Marion wanted to try out a new sewing machine. They were complementary oranges and blues, fairly startling. I then looked at them and realized they'd look rather good sashed between large areas of black, with a bargello panel in the middle that used up even tinier scraps. The panel in the middle looked like a sort of abstract Scottish Highland landscape, and I thought some applique flames would look nice. By now we're past the point of no return, this thing isn't just an experiment, it's a PROJECT. It grows lots of decorative thread tracing the way the flames swirl, gets quite a lot bigger with added dark grey borders, and at that point a couple of friends of ours decide to get married. Okay, she's Dutch and they're going to live on the edge of the Scottish Highlands, so a Mondriaan-like abstract Highland landscape is a good fit. We try to finish it for their wedding, but realize we're going to be away for it. So it gets put away nearly finished. Then I think, hey it would look better if we added a lot more quilting, so it gets that done, and we're six months after their wedding wondering what the next suitable occasion to give it to them is. Housewarming? Well they're building their own house and there isn't really a date when you could say it needed to be warmed - my own take on that is that it's either (a) when you can first flush the toilet or (b) when you first pay council tax on it, but they seem to be doing okay with just an Elsan and not telling the council for quite a while yet. In the end...

"bugger it, this is your wedding present, sorry it's six months late".

Good luck. Leave room for a "congratulations on your retirement" message.
