Blood -- NOT OT

Hello Quilters. I don't get to post much any more, but I try to keep up with what is going on -- praying with you and happy dancing for you and all.

I'm just about to finish the baby quilt for my newest grandson, Ashton, who was born in December (I'm a little slow - I have no machine). They will be visiting me in Ohio from Colorado on August 18, and I'm working feverishly to have it finished by then.

Anyway, I guess I stab my under fingers too hard, plus I take a baby aspirin every day, so I've ended up with a LOT of blood on this pastel aqua quilt! I've had little dabs before and I've used my own spit, which people on here have said works. It does work on little spots, but these are BIG.

If anyone has this problem, what do you use to make sure the blood comes out? I want to make sure it comes out the first time! Do you soak it anything first? Do you just use Spray 'N Wash or something like that?

Thank in advance to any suggestions.

Hi,

NAYY but I have had great success removing organic stains with Oxi-Clean. Both the regular powder that you can get anywhere and the spray laundry prewash product should take care of you.

If you can't find that particular brand, there are plenty of oxygen based cleaners out there now that should work just as well.

Hydrogen peroxide is also good at removing blood.

I've had good luck with the dilute peroxide one buys in bottles. Test on scraps of the same fabric, first, of course. I tried this on a blue chambray shirt and got out all the blood with no bleaching. I think this is what nurses use to get spots out of their scrubs.

First, just use cold water. Don't use it hot or it will set the stain instead of removing it. A lot of times you can get most of the blood out just with the cold water then use some of the other methods listed.

Good to see you again Glo. Congrats on your little Ashton.

Try some specialist products available in the grocery store, near the laundry soap. Zout is very good. Another company (MAYBE Carbona) does up small bottles of cleaners, each for specific problems. Look for that too. The Kroger here has those and Zout. NAYY!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will give them a try this weekend and give you a report!

I'm quilting in the border now, then I have to make the binding and sew that on. They will be here Thursday, the 18th. I have to clean this weekend AND try to finish the quilt.

I think I might have to steal Butterfly's name. When I was making my DS & DDIL's purple and green quilt, I cut a hole in it when I was snipping a thread after quilting a line. I found some embroidered butterflies at TSWLTH, and appliqued one over the little hole. There was other butterfly fabric in the quilt, so that solved my problem. They even display the quilt on the back of the sofa with the butterfly SHOWING.

Then, week before last, I DID THE SAME THING WITH THIS BABY QUILT, even though I had gone out after doing it the first time and bought special scissors with built up edges to keep you from getting too close to the fabric! There is a little dog in the fabric that is looking up in the air. I'm going to try to get one of those embroidered butterflies close enough to that dog to make it look like he's looking up at the butterfly. There are no other butterflies in this quilt, only ducks, rabbits and dogs (its the Animal Talk fabric). I hope it looks okay. Looks like the butterfly is going to be made quilt trademark!

Have a great weekend, and wish me luck.

That happened to me on the label on my DS and DDIL's wedding quilt.... I washed the quilt and used Oxy clean and it almost went away. The blood was on white.

Wish I had known about hydrogen peroxide. Anyway, I told them but not where it is and they haven't found it yet.

Spray and Wash works wonders for me.

As a paramedic, we used hydrogen peroxide to take blood out of our uniform shirts, but I would think *you would want to carefully test a scrap of the fabric first*. It never affected our shirts, but they were white.

Failing that, the Tide-To-Go stain removal pens are supposed to be quite good.

Saliva is a germy way of starting on it. Rub it in while the blood is still wet. Rinse with cold water. Then when you wash the quilt use spray&wash or oxi-clean.

Something is tickling my memory about someone who wrote that they decided they weren't going to learn how to hand quilt, because all the handquilting instructions they ever saw included instructions on how to remove bloodstains from quilts. =:-O

Was just getting ready to post this, being I am a Med Tech and just don't work anymore, I did work back in the days, oops telling my age, when all professionals wore white uniforms. Learned really quick that Hydrogen peroxide was my best friend.

Saline solution will remove blood. Just salt water works. Have had to do that to a white top, when I had a head injury that bled all over the place.

Try peroxide on a Q-Tip to blot it up and then wash it.

Well, I'm sure this will sound a little strange, but I've had really great results using a protein based hair shampoo. Unfortunately, I've had a few days, during "that time of the month" when I've been unable to leave the house, for fear of making a mess of myself. Must be an age thing, creeping up on the big pause. Anyway, when accidents do happen, they can be pretty bad, so I've resorted to treating my clothing with the shampoo and then a trip in the washer. I've found that, for thicker objects like jeans, etc., that the peroxide & Oxi-Clean just don't get deep enough into the layers to really remove everything. For some reason, the protein based shampoos, with the lather and stuff, seem to clean fairly deeply. Good Luck!
