DS's Community Service quilts

You have all heard about my 18 year old DS - Brilliant, mathematical, ADD, and no sense.

In February, when he was driving to a college to make a final decision on which school to attend this fall, he was caught going 83 mph in a 60 mph zone. Because he was still 17, this was sent to Juvenile Court. The judge offered him the option of doing 83 hours of community service to benefit the county where he was speeding or a verdict of reckless driving with the penalties of an expensive ticket, raised insurance rates, and points on his license.

Of course he will do the community service, even though this is about

70 miles from our home. He will spend some time with their American Red Cross chapter to put in "face-time", but the rest will be spent making quilts for their guild to give to the local women's shelter.

I have been working a LOT recently (4-5 shifts a week rather than 4-6 shifts a month), so I have only been able to show him the basics and turned him loose with some fabric and my equipment. I suggested that he make a quilt with 6-1/2 inch squares that were precut for another project to get used to quilting. His second quilt was a Snails Trail based on a 3-4-5 right triangle. It isn't perfect, but it was only his second quilt! Not to mention that it is a very original idea. He's finishing up quilt tops #3 and 4 now, then I will show him how to sandwich the quilts and machine quilt them. He does not care for handsewing, so I will show him how to attach binding and stich it down with a decorative stitch.

He knew that he would be able to quilt, he had no idea how much he would love it. I have created a monster . He has asked for EQ5 so he can create quilts while he is away at college.

Here are his efforts so far, I'll add more pictures as he finished more quilts

What a wonderful way to do Community Service, and he did a nice job on the quilts.

Congratulations to both of you.

Who would have thought what a silly piece of driving would lead to? >gg< How marvellous, though, to offer such a sensible 'penance'.

Well done to your DS for taking the quilts *really* on board.

Having looked at his 'snail trail', I am very impressed with this thinking. Please get him to Google for Baravelle Spiral. He will love it. You can do it with a square and get the four spirals he has achieved on his own, but you can also do it with other polygons.

I have done a set of 12 mathematical topic quilts and am at the moment finishing the series. I got an awful lot of the mathematical information from the Internet. One site seems to get you looked and I just went on and on! Another couple of fractals whose sites he might enjoy looking at, because they are perfectly quiltable are: Lute of Pythagoras Pythagorean Tree Von Koch's Snowflake, Sierpinski's Triangle (also called Gasket in some places)

I know he'll have fun! I have been working on this for more than two years - no boredom! . In message , Kim E writes

He is having so much fun and is extremely proud of his work (I'm proud too )

Quilt tops 3&4 are done now. He will learn to sandwich them next week. We are going to NC for DD to sing at my grandmother's retirement apartment or he would do that today. I really want DS to see my grandmother, she is 97 years old and we aren't sure how long we will be blessed with her presence. She is so excited that DS is going to the college she and my grandfather graduated from.

Yup - adorable but mad as a bag of ferrets, kids like that!

Zoom! Mind on other things!

What a great idea!

They are lovely! Has he paid you for the fabrics and batting yet? If he does, I bet it'll add up to the amount of the fine by the time he's done! ;) Good for him, anyway, in lots of ways: learning a new set of skills, repaying the community he injured through carelessness, and avoiding long term insurance problems, just for starters! Oh, and the biggie? Learning to stick with a project to the end! :D

All these science/maths oriented ones have the same lack of common sense gene. I live with two of them! ADD just adds to the excitement!

Sounds like you should find him a machine of his own, in addition to the EQ5, and encourage him to buy his own stash. Otherwise, you may not be able to use your machine.
