DS's Community Service quilt saga

You may remember that DS was caught speeding in a county over an hour from our house. As he was doing 83mph in a 60mph area, he was offered a choice of a Reckless Driving ticket or 83 hours of community service. He called the probation officer to get the OK to make charity quilts for the local quilt guild to give to homeless/traumatized children. Unbeknownest to him, he was talking to the secretary who thought it was a fine idea, rather than the probation officer herself.

DS was happily quilting along on his 5th quilt, up to 51 hours, when I insisted that he call the probation officer to see if he could do all

83 hours with his quilts. Since he had taken the word of the secretary, the probation officer threatened to not approve ANY of his quilting time. She talked to the president of the quilt guild, apparently had a change of heart, and agreed to approve the 51 hours he had already spent. The 5 quilts were still tops at this point, so he still had many hours to go until the quilts were ready for donation.

He finished up the quilts, decided to keep his 3-4-5 Snail's Trail since the hours wouldn't count, and prepared to do the 32 hours in the county. The president of the quilt guild was delighted with the 4 quilts and was quite impressed with his work. He did 13 hours on Saturday and will come home from college for 2 more weekends to finish up the rest of the hours.

While at college last week, he stopped by his calculus teacher's office and saw a sign for a quilt store in her office. It seems that her family owned a shop for years! He is looking forward to "talking quilts" with her.

When he got back to school Sunday night, he was mobbed by students needing help with their calculus and physics homework. He is having a great time at college!

How wonderful, Kim! It seems that a lot of long-term good is going to come of your DS's one misstep -- both in terms of the community service he's doing and in terms of a longer-lasting interest on his part. :D

Plus he's learned a valuable lesson -- always talk to the person with the actual authority to make decisions. *grin*

Indeed! :)

The quilts are looking great, though James thought the one with the black square bits and yellow crosses would make his eyes scream! ;)
