Amazing mini quilts- link

I got my American Quilter magazine today- my fave quilting magazine of all. There's an article about George Siciliano- a very talented and amazing quilter who creates the most intricate mini quilts! Here's the link to his website- I LOVE the one titled 'Soil Festivities'- which is only 11.25 in. square and has at least ten million nearly microscopic pieces of fabric in it. Well, perhaps a slight exaggeration, but not by much.....

I saw "Purple Dawn" in Estes Park last month. UNREAL! I hope George uses magnifiers because he's going to go blind otherwise! Lobo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Delete the obvious to reply to me personally. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was at the VT Quiltfest this month and was standing in front of one of his quilts and George came by and he told me that there were 4029 ( or something similar ) in the quilt . I didn't know it was him...and I said..He's crazy !...LOL Anyway I quickly realized it was him as the sign had said "over 4000 pieces" and here was a man telling me exactly how many were in the quilt. I told him it was a beauty and wished I'd had my camera that day..He handed me his card and told me to email him and he would send me a pic of it !!! He was giving a class there and I told him that I'd love to take one so he told me to write VQF to get him back for one !! He also told me that he uses only cottons when I'd inquired if they might be made from silk because of such tiny pieces...He does amazing work !!! I'm always amazed at people who take up quilting and before you know it they have made an incredible and totally their imprint on the quilting world. Mary

That's also a mini lesson about being careful what you say at quilt shows. In your case, it worked out great. I've been known to spout off when looking at a quilt then clapping a hand over my mouth hoping the maker wasn't near by. After all, she didn't make it to please ME. And I haven't had a quilt at an important show!

The very first show I entered a wall-hanging for, I was so nervous. Also, I was a white-glove hostes for part of the show. Wouldn't you know I white-gloved in the row where my piece was hanging. It was hanging right next to one of the featured quilter's pieces. I hear from "what a poor example next to this feature quilter" to "I love this, too bad she won't get the praise it deserves hanging next to the professional's piece"

Ya just never know.....

How true !..When he told me the number of pieces and I had said "He's crazy !". ..I said it laughingly it and he responded kindly . I have a soft voice and honestly don't think he quite heard me anyway...either way he took it nicely and chatted a bit with me.. Nice man.. I've always been careful not to downgrade anyone's work at a show just because of who might be listening...could be a relative, child of theirs, or the quilter, etc. I'm amazed at some of the things people do say though...if you don't like the color combo you just do not have to say it out loud....say something nice about it......be inventive.. I used to have a friend who I always thought could find something neat to say about someone's work, art, etc. I always looked forward to hear what she would say . Mary

I have a friend that can do that too Mary. She can find something good to say about almost any quilt. And if she's making a negative comment at all, she will say it in a way that totally puts the onus on her rather than the quilter. It's a very nice trait.

He is a former Long Islander and I have had the pleasure of meeting him and seeing his quilts at local shows.

I too was captivated by the miniature quilts! Seeing this is my year of the 'small quilts' (which I am just loving). Yesterday I made a little 2in square block using an diamond centred log cabin. It was such fun and doesn't diminish one's stash at all LoL. I didn't have any printable foundation to hand, so just used a bit of washaway stabiliser and drew the outlines. Now I think a trip to the LQS is in order today (particularly as it is rainy and what else is a girl to do?) to buy some graduated solids.

Cheers Bronnie (between projects at the moment)
