Tote/crop bag questions (long - questions are at the bottom)

John was very sweet to me on the weekend - after I said that my carry bag didn't work well for taking stuff to the crop, he said he'd take me to get one! I was going to use my Joanns 40% off coupon to buy it, but when I looked on the website they were already on sale for three days only... so we went shopping. First we drove down to Michaels to compare prices (expensive but if they have a sale I'll have to go back because they had some neat stuff) then I dropped into the Rag Shop (they don't sell totes, but I got a bunch of my adored peely stickers for $1.99 each - hooray!)

Then we drove up to Pompano to go to Joanns. Joanns seems to have a bad tendency not to carry stock in their actual store - you look on the website and they have a thousand items, with about 200 of them marked as 'web-only', but when you go into the store they only have

200 others there, and they never have the actual item I was looking for! I find it very frustrating because I'm the sort of person who a)likes to see what they're buying with their own eyes instead of taking someone else's word for it, and b)demands immediate gratification. If I'm going to fork out fifty bucks for an item I want to hand over the cash and walk out the door with it in my hands, not wait two weeks for delivery!

Anyway, they had hardly any storage stuff in the store... and they didn't have any sign of it being on sale despite the website's claims :( I was considering the smaller crop bags but they didn't have any of them... so I ended up buying something entirely different - they had their own 'Essentials' crop bag on sale for eighteen bucks! I hadn't been considering that one because there are a few bad reports on the reviews page, saying it's a bit flimsy... but at that price it was worth considering. John gave me a choice - I could go home and order the crop bag I wanted online for sixty or so dollars, OR I could wait a few months and then get the XL one from Costco for ninety... or I could buy the Joanns one and he'd let me spend the other thirty dollars on other sale stuff right then. Put that way it was an easy choice, especially since he says he'll be happy to buy me another one in 12 months time if this one doesn't last :P

I got the crop bag, a Summer paper pad ($8!), a box of discount cardstock ($10 with a bunch of textured CS in it), some loose paper for a project, and two smaller carrybags made for quilters but they look like they're just fine for carrying scrap stuff ($5 each). One's a nylon 'folder' with zippered pockets, and one's a collapsible square nylon box with a shoulder strap. I almost got even more goodies than that but John was getting tired and the stuff was getting HEAVY!

And now for the questions - I've got this thing and I'm not at all sure how best to pack it.

Do you keep your scrapbbooking stuff (or some part of it) in your tote all the time? Or do you just pack it before you go to a crop? If your tote has metal snap rings in it, what are they meant for? Do you keep your pens in the 'pen-holder' or other stuff? I'm thinking of putting my tools in the pen-holders on the top of the case, but will they fall out? It's all very confusing...

I keep all of my tools in my Generations crop in style (is that what it's called?). I used to have all of my favorite paper in there, but then it was packed full and I couldn't zip it. And since I hardly go to crops anyway, I took the paper out. Now, there's all of the room for extras!!! Mine has a removable folder that just has clear dividers in it, no rings. If there were rings, I would get those plastic holders for stickers and such like scraps and small embellishments.

I have my pens in the pen holder, the decorative and regular scissors in the holders. I keep the punches and other stuff in pockets. Also, all of my adhesives are in the pockets on the side. In the removable folder I keep projects I'm working on in there. I also put my paper trimmer in there. I have 2 holders for (almost all) of my embellishments, stickers and such that stays in there. I need to get something that I can sort my embellishments.

I have a 4 drawer cart that I have in my bedroom that will eventually go into my closet where I'm transferring all of my scrapbooking stuff. I have to clean it out a little better to get that in there, but it will fit! In there I have my stamps, buttons, copy paper and other things that I've come across that I think will look good on a scrapbook page. (like the bag that the dentist gives with the toothbrush and stuff- clear bag that has brush your teeth or something written on it. When Kendra goes to the dentist, I plan on using that as a mat or something...), ribbons, strings Kendra has pulled out of my favorite maroon blanket.!

I hope you enjoy your new toys! Keep us posted.

karen, i have the tote your ended up with. i love mine. i have taken it on vacation a few times with albums and my altered stuff i do. once you start packing it, you won't believe how much you can fit in there. i keep saying that everytime i pack it for somewhere. at the beginning of the month, i went for a week to my dad's. i always think i have to take everyhting i own. :) it held up like a champ and doesn't sqwish stuff. mine ended up on it's side with a huge suitcase on it and it didn't even budge. that's the last time DH loads up the truck!! anyway i'm so glad you found some good deals. i too am always frustrated with joann's. they are about the only store for miles so i don't have much of a choice. however, i require instant gratification too, but i have learned that some stuff are better to wait for. that's why i signed up for the free shipping club on joann.com. it buy alot now online and the things i just can't wait for i go to the actual store. so glad you had a great weekend.

What a sweet DH you have there! I don't have the tote you picked up, but I do have the Crop in Style XXL....the mongo huge-o one. LOL I don't keep it loaded since I do have space for stuff on shelves and what-not. I load it and take it with me to crops and stuff, though. (Just don't ask Kenda or MC about me loading up!) LOL

My pens and other loose markers have been staying in the 3 sided pen holder mine came with. Now they are in a plastic caddy with a case. Can your pen holder be taken out and sit or stand somewhere? That's what I did with mine, and it's worked fine. Storing things in your tote is a great idea, especially if you don't have much storage space. Plus, if you don't have a craft table/area all your own, your not overtaking the dining table all the time. (Voice of experience here. LOL)

Hope you have lots of fun with your new toys!

My first crop bag was actually one designed for beads. I didn't know the difference when I bought it and to this day it is my favorite crop bag. It is huge and it holds albums, paper, pens, and has several removable inserts (with black velvet backing no less) that hold just about everything and several pockets on the sides and the back. The bottom section has three large removable tackle boxes that hold fibers, eyelets and small embellishments. I got it at AC Moore and it was $79.99 minus the 40% off coupon. Since then I have purchased 3 more crop bags but I usually take this one with me because everything fits so perfectly. Don't be afraid to think out of the box, there are other solutions even if they are not primarily designed for scrapbookers.

Karen, congrats on those great purchases! My DH got my a "crop in style" tote for X'mas last year. I've only used it once and was a bit disappointed that my Cutterpede could not fit propperly into it. I might be in the market for a bigger one pretty soon.

I got my 'scrapbooking' tote bag from JoAnns. With a 40% off coupon, I got it for $25.00!! It is not made for scrapping, but actually its a quilting or sewing bag. It is blue fabric has wheels and an expandable handle to drag it along, and has a tapestry top.The top folds out and down and had loops on it for scissors or pens. I keep my papers and pre-assembled page kits in a separate 12x12 expandable file, so I can have more room in my bag for other stuff.I can fit my 2 sizzix alphabets, Xyron 150, in it. I keep my markers, writing utensils, scissors, adhesives and small tools and things I use most often in one of those little plastic 3-drawer units I got at Walmart. It fits perfectly down in the bag, and I can just lift it out and set it on the table for easy reach while I am working. I also use a plastic organizer I found in the hardware dep. (by the mailboxes and tool boxes) at Walmart for my eyelets, brads and misc. embellishments. It has a lot more sections in it that the one you see in the craft section for embroidery floss, and it is shallower. Those fit flat in the bottom of my bag too. Pockets on the sides hold my cutter, punches, extra ahesives, etc. I have my own little 'system' so it all fits just right..lol It's not as big as some bags I have seen, but it limits me so I CAN'T take stuff I don't really need to a crop..lol I don't normally store anything in my tote bag when I am at home. Sounds like you did good on your shopping trip! have fun with your purchases!

Linda and I have the exact same bag, and I love it. Got one for my sister, 'cause it worked so well for me. I don't store anything in it when I'm not using it, but it easily hold the "packs" of stuff and paper that I haul to a crop or to Archivers. I love that my sizzix alphabets fit so well in it too! Use the pockets on the side for pens, embellishments and when I load 'er all up, my 12 x 12 cutter fits perfectly on top. Best $25 I've spent on organizing! I agree with everyone else on this one-sometimes it pays to look beyond the scrapbooking section. Kathy
