Adjusting rtw skirt

I need to adjust a skirt I bought to make it longer. I bought 2 so I have matching material.

The skirt has a zip at the back and a yoke waistband and is lined from below the waistband.

I thought I'd remove the yoke, add in a piece about 5" or 6" wide all the way round and then replace the yoke.

The only problem is that even with the original skirt hanging much lower down I need the zip opening to get it on and off. I suppose I'll need to replace the zip with a much longer one - unless there is a clever way of having one zip below the other or of closing the opening in the original skirt another way which can be opened but won't come apart when I sit down!

Will a long zip cause any problems?

Any help for any stage of the whole process gratefully received.

Many thanks

Susan

You would need a longer zip, but instead of messing with that, can't you just add to the bottom? There has to be some clever way to use the extra fabric. Maybe a bit of ruffle, or patchwork, or if it fits nice just add a band to the bottom, maybe with some piping between.

In the latest pattern books of the Big 3, there are skirts with some sort of extra decor at the bottom, whether it be different types of pleats, a gathered "ruffle", and/or other things. Michelle, did you not recently post a skirt pattern-McCall's, I believe, that looks so nice with flounces/borders? I bought it in two sizes to fit my two older DGD and my DDIL. I'm thinking Christmas gifts. Emily

Or add it 3-6 inches from the bottom, even, and just splice it in.

Thanks to those who replied.

In the end I realised I didn't need to add so much so I took the yoke off the second skirt and attached it to the top of the first skirt. The yokes are about 2" deep. The zip stayed in place and the 'top' yoke is held shut by button.

As the skirt sits low down on my waist I now have the length I need.

Thanks again
