Agh! Bias tape!

First of all, thankyou Kate for your reply, it worked well around the neckline (with a only a little bit of rippling! :P). Anyway I got 'creative' and decided to make a big (2 inches) piece of satin bias tape to go around the hem (by folding my satin into a big triangle) - I'm seeing it in stores and I had to cut it on the bias because it's a stretch top. I had it all pinned in beautifully, it was lying wonderfully flat, but when I sewed it, it twisted and rippled like nothing else! I had sandwiched the dress fabric in between the two layers of tape and was using my zipper foot to get it right against the edge and sewing through the lot. The more I sewed the more it twisted! Should I not use my zipper foot? I have a Brother and not a wide variety of feed - should I get a roller or walking foot or something or do I just need to pay more attention to the direction of the curve of the hem? Thanks so much,

Katy M.

P.S. I've never worked with bias cut anything before and the hem looks like the side of Kates bridesmaids dresses from hell but WORSE!

Forget the zip foot: you need a walking foot for this! Sorry! Also worth trying: BASTE the tape, don't just pin it, and pull it ever so slightly taut as you apply it. Also use a short stitch with a v-e-r-y slight zigzag: EXPERIMENT first, as this will be a right royal pig to unpick!

Oh, and SEW SLOWLY! ')

Thankyou so much! I went and bought one (it wiped me out for the next two weeks A$65!!), but I have it attached and tested and it works so well - I was delighted to see the fabric staying put! What is a slight zigzag? I have three zigzag settings from tight to wide, should I use the wide with a small stitch length like 1.5? Also can I use this foot for everything? Or is a normal presser foot the best way to go for most things? I pretty much sew knit and woven clothes for myself. Thanks!!
