Another happy dance

Joy, joy, joy...my 403A arrived the other day and and it sews great. I won some cams and a buttonholer on EBAY and can't wait for those to arrive. Also ordered some presser feet from a company.

To be frankly honest, I was surprised at how loud it was. My little Fashion Mate 237 is much quieter...and seems as powerful. I know the 237 doesn't have all the capabilities as the ones with the cams, but to me it's an excellent machine. It's never balked at any task and sews a beautiful stitch. I don't understand why they go so cheaply on EBAY...it's been a very reliable machine.

DH came in the sewing room and looked over the 403. He then said, "So, you gonna sell that one?" (the 237) Believe me, he got a look..........

Cindy, Congratulations on your 'new' machine! =20 The gear-driven Singers like the 403 are very sweet to sew on!

You might want to take a look at the gears and make sure they have fresh grease on them. Ditto for oil on the moving parts. If the gears or moving parts are dry, they'll be noisy. There are no belts in these models, so it's important to make sure they're lubricated properly.

If you got a manual with the mach>Joy, joy, joy...my 403A arrived the other day and and it sews great. I = won

You're so lucky! I have been interested in that model, as well as a

401. I believe both have a slant needle; I know the 401 does. (I'm trying to keep the same feet for all my machines). It might be loud, but that's the beauty of it; it's heavy metal and a serious workhorse. I have a Touch and Sew and it sews anything I can throw at it. It's a little loud, but I've had it for 30 years, and bought it used; that's how good it is.

As to DH, bop him for me, would you? My DH asked the same thing, if I was going to sell my Touch and Sew when I bought a newer Singer slant needle. I gave him a growly look..... He now can't figure out why I would have two sewing machines. (I'm even thinking of buying a third just so I'll have more stitches.) But then, he's the one with five different electric drills.....

Your DH sounds like mine. He picks at me about my sewing machines but I usually just ignore him. I realize that I have an addiction. Is there a 10 step program for Sewing Machine Anonymous??

This man came into the sewing room yesterday and pointed at 2 of my older machines saying, "These could go to Goodwill." And pointed to 2 others, "You're never going to fix these." And to another, "But couldn't you sell THAT one?" Yet, he collects stereo equipment like old 8track players, old record players, cassette decks, receivers, etc., not to mention the 3 guitars, 2 dobros, 2 mandolins, 1 cello, 2 electric basses, and the big doghouse upright bass that stands guard in my bedroom!!!!! He has crates and crates of records in addition to that!

And then to complain about my little machines...

He may yet stay in the doghouse a few more days ;) Hmmph!

AKK! MEN! On the whole, mine is OK, but he would like me to restrict the number of machines I own because of the size of the house. This IS understandable... At least he doesn't moan about machines at me and then collect 9 different types of bench saw! ;)

Yes, the 401, 403, 404, are all Singer Slants. The 301 was the first slant Singer introduced. =20

I have about 30 sewing machines, my DH is very tolerant, but then again he has tools up the wazoo...I tell him my SMs are my tools.

DD just says I'm crazy :-)

I have the perfect solution -- offer him a 1-for-1 deal -- for every percent of his collection he gets rid of, you will get rid of a similar percentage of yours. Betcha he wouldn't take you up on it.

I just won a bid for a buttonholer to fit my machine , Greist #6 - low shank, left needle. I should get it within two weeks. (yeah !!!!)

Personaly I think that if it were more advertised that sewing machines come will all those nifty gadgets and accessories, more men would sew. or at least have fully equiped sewing machines.

Don't beleive me , just say those words in front of your DHs and just watch them drewl ( I have no idea how to spell that)

Ok!! It's official. The SMA (Sewing Machines Anonymous) has begun in earnest!

....(ahem) "My name is Cindy and I am addicted to Sewing Machines..."

But aren't we supposed to be *weaning* ourselves from the machines? I wish we all lived closer together so we could get together with a good hot pot of java, some pastries, and our sewing machines. Wouldn't that be grand?

The sewing cams came that I won on EBAY! Not only was it cams but I was pleasantly surprised by an original 403 owner's manual, a straight stitch needle plate, special purpose foot, hemmer foot, ruffler, button sewing foot, seam guide, zipper foot, a multi-slotted binder, and 2 singer screwdrivers. I knew there were accessories, but didn't realize it would be so much! I've been playing with all the cams (there are 8) and attachments tonight and discovered the machine will hold 2 needles!! I never knew that.

I've cleaned her up real well...a little detergent and water to the head, and greased/oiled everything. She sounds a little quieter now and does a fantastic job.

Now for a name.........

I'm eventually going up the mountain to visit baby sis in Elkins, WVa., before she disinherits me. Where are you? Cea<

I'm in the southernmost tip of the state, bordering VA. We even *talk* southern down here...uh, Appalachian, that is.

Your sis is probably about a 3-4 hour drive away :(

I noticed you said you were eventually "going up the mountain" to visit her...aint' it the truth!! Anywhere in WV is "up the mountain."

Yup. I keep hearing that "we" have too much stuff in our apartment. But it always seems to be my things that have to go. His T-shirts that are so old they're falling apart and that he'll never fit into again anyway are okay. My teacups are not. Go figure.

Can I join?

My name is Larisa, and I'm addicted to sewing machines (so far, my trusty Kenmore, my great-grandmother's treadle, my DH's hand crank, and one that I haven't identified yet, but that is an oldie discovered at the Salvation Army store!).

Now I want one that can don lots of fancy stitches!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sewing Machines. I just picked up number 42 on Tuesday. $5.00 two tone 301A. Straight stitch but at only 16 pounds very good for quilt classes. Cleaned about 30 years of cigarettes off her, lubed and oiled and she is packed for my Mystery quilt weekend also my very first quilting experience. I will be taking down a Pfaff 30 to give to a friend so the herd will be down to

41 temporarily. Some are on permanent loan and many I will refurb and donate to people who would otherwise never own a machine. It is fun and I have acquired a great group of friends because of it. A Singer 115 I refurbed went to guy who was on compensation because of a high pressure water injury to his foot. He cut half of it off. He is now sewing leather moccasins and selling them. It is adding to the meager comp monies and he is very happy to be productive again. His wife is estatic.........I have my permanent favourites that will never leave and they include about 20 machines. They are all over the house and the Merrow resides on the toilet tank in the bathroom. Decorating around sewing machines is fun and inventive. Enjoy your new found obsession and never disregard a machine that is frozen or dirty. There are some real gems under years of grime.
