Another happy dance

All these snippets make me feel vaguely guilty about a Brother 2002D and PC6000----plus a less than 8 year old serger..........

But!! I can certainly do a ton of things with them!!

Not necessarily. Think of a 10-speed bike. You can have different ratios.

There are old sergers/overlockers that were used in factories, that are set up to run off a drive belt. These can be treadled.

Hmmmm..... The SMA - do you think I could join? In the past year, since I've gotten back into sewing, I find myself constantly pulled to checking out more and more sewing machines, sewing gadgets, notions and the like. I originally had an old Singer Futura, a Singer treadle and a Featherweight. When I decided to start back sewing again I thought I would just be doing a "little sewing and mending once in awhile" so I bought a mid-range Kenmore. I gave my Futura to my daughter-in-law but I'm still left with three and I keep looking at others! (even though my budget won't allow any more at the moment) It's funny how at first I told my husband that I didn't need anything fancy but I now find myself drooling over the Husqvarnas! Plus I keep checking out the older metal Singers online thinking how it might be nice to get another one of those. I find it is like something is pulling me to all these machines! Am I headed for trouble?!

Oh oh...guess I have to join up. I have 30 or so...mostly old Singers. including my grandma's "Red Eye" treadle which I am restoring....

I was able to part with two of 'em this past winter, but it was very painful and I'm not sure I can do it again! Especially after all those hours cleaning, adjusting, lubbing, etc. You bond with'em, you know?

(Hey Larisa, for those 'fancy stitches,' a lovely Singer 500 or 401 would work very nicely for you!)

Thought that one might catch you! ;) It would need gears on the treadle...

Don't forget that Lily does 240 stitches, then I can flip them end to end or up for down, add strings of them together in the memories, and play fast and loose with the number of needles... 'Bouth the only thing she doesn't do is full embroidery. I've always said I'd need an embroidery machine AS WELL as the Lily... and the others! :)

That's what I'd like to find: and a suitable industrial type threadle base for it... And a whole new room to keep it in! Anyone got a spare lotto ticket they don't need?

Okay, I'm drooling now! I sure would like these; either would be nice, but more the PC6000 or how about a Singer Quantum? Ooooooh, yes!

All my compatriots in machine excess: I don't think there is an official entry song or ritual handshake--you buy your second machine, you're automatically a member! The only requirements: you must have pity, real and unfeigned, for those who own only one machine. You must be an enabler. Help other sewers shed their machine inhibitions. I think we've successfully demonstrated that one need not be rich to own sewing machines, just resourceful. So, slap yourself on the back, congratulate yourself, and go sew! Cea (ouch!) PS--Yes, Bonnie, Nirvana is within your reach!

Welcome one and all to the SMA (Sewing Machines Anonymous)!!

According to Cea, the symptoms are:

  1. "You buy your second machine, you're automatically a member!

  1. You must have pity, real and unfeigned, for those who own only one machine.

  2. You must be an enabler. Help other sewers shed their machine inhibitions.

  1. One need not be rich to own sewing machines, just resourceful."

Since several have poured out their souls by listing their machines openly and honestly, I too shall confront my addiction head on:

  1. Early 1900's New Companion treadle (working) 2. A Singer 128 (deader than 4 o'clock) 3. Another Singer 128 (deader than 4 o'clock) 4. An old Singer head for treadle (unidentified, dead.) 5. Another old Singer head for treadle (unidentified, dead.) 6. Working Brother from the 50's? 7. Working Precision Built Deluxe (50's?) 8. Working Singer 403A 9. Working Singer Fashion Mate 237 10. Singer Featherweight (the new one with the space age blue disc on the front) 11. White 3/4 thread serger 12. White 3300 embroidery machine 13. Brother PC8500 sewing/embroidery machine

And I just sold a Singer 6606 and gave away a National serger.

Ok....that's it. I feel better now, like a giant weight is lifted.

Can't WAIT till flea market season :)

You are so brave to face your addiction head on. You have inspired me, and have given me the courage to confront my own addiction.

(Standing up) My name is Irene, and I am a Sewing Machine addict.=20

I have all the listed symptoms, including:

5) Constantly thinking of SMs. Read the classifieds every day, cannot go within 1 mile of a thrift shop, or drive by a garage sale, without stopping. Prior to traveling, will check Switchboard.com for a list of second hand stores and thrift shops along the way.

6) Prefers to find a machine that doesn't work well or is dead over one that does (in order to get it real cheap and fix it).

7) Would rather work on restoring an SM than go out to dinner.

Here I will, for the first time in my life, lay my addiction out for the entire world to see....including my DH.

  1. (2) Singer 401s (working)
  2. (2) Singer 404s. (working)
  3. (1) Singer 403. (working)
  4. (2) Singer 66's (grandma's 'redeye' treadle and a "Godzilla." Both undergoing restoration, inc. treadle cabinet.)
  5. (6) Singer 301s. (Used to be 8 - I sold two). 2-tan short beds,
1-tan long bed, 2-two tones, and 1-black long bed (all working)
  1. (1) Black 221. (working)
  2. (1) White 221. (working)
  3. (1) Centennial 221. (working)
  4. (1) 222K FW free arm. (working)
  5. (1) Singer 185J. (working)
  6. (1) Necchi Supernova. (working)=20
  7. (1) Singer 201. (working, just finished rewiring)
  8. (1) Centennial Singer 15-91. (working)
  9. (1) Singer 15. (working)
  10. (1) 20-year old BabyLock serger 5280E (working).
16 (2) Singer 503s (1 working, 1 in pieces) 17 (1) Singer Touch and Sew 639 (working) 18 (1) Singer Touch and Sew 640 (working) 19 (1) Singer Touch and Sew 758 (working) 20 (1) Singer 615U 21 (1) Morse Fotomatic III (not working) 22 (1) Singer 4562 (working) 23 (1) Kenmore 158.10402 (working) 23 (1) Kenmore 120.71 (working) 24 (1) Wards Signature 40+ years old (not working, in parts)

Upon looking at my list, I feel as though I should be ashamed, but I am strengthened by the fact that only three were obtained via eBay. (The others, all through classified ads, garage sales, thrift shops or just plain given to me...)

I feel that there is hope for me, as I did sell 2 of the

301s....however, I am still having withdrawal symptoms and nightmares about letting them go....but I am comforted in the knowledge that they went to a very loving home.

-Irene, who also cannot wait for flea market/garage sale season!

Don't feel so bad... I haven't got quite as many as the others either, but I drool and dream:

Accessible right now:

1) Singer 2210 2) My grandma's New Home 3) Singer Izek 4) My Singer Tiny Serger (which, believe it or not, works pretty good for small jobs) 5) My 25yo Nelco which needs cleaning badly.

I also have a couple in the storage shed which I pull out occasionally and make promises to ;-)

As an adjunct, I am also a member of the "Hopelessly Never-ending Stash Society." I made a quick stop at TSWLTH (only for floss-Joann's too far away) and looked at the $1.00 table for something to make a "muslin" of something I drafted. Nothing, but that didn't stop me from buying two yards of pink snakeskin print knit with the shiny coating (didn't we have a discussion about this before?. I'll never wear it, but I do believe my DD needs a new pair of jazz pants for rehearsals .
