I have a dilemma..........My husbands grandmother asked me to hem up some sleeves for her.(She is very petite) I have hemmed up some knit polo shirt sleeves for her before where I took off the cuff and then reattached them, but this is knitted sweaters. Can I actually do this? I was thinking about cutting them off and then serge the ends and hand hem up the sleeves. Would this be correct? One has a cuff and the other is a straight sleeve. Help!!!! I don't want to wreck the sweaters. She said how much she really liked them. Thanks, Sandy

The straight sleeve, you can hem, the one with the cuff, you should be able to re-attach the cuff (probably have to graft it back on by hand). Are they hand or machine knits, and how chunky?

Yes, they are machine knitted (yarn) and quite chunky. I am worried about unraveling. Sandy

With good reason. Do you knit at all? Instead of trying to

*re-attach* the finished edge, how about unraveling the edge up to where it should be, and *knit* it back on at the proper length? You might have to un-do the sleeve seam a bit to get the stitches to go on a needle. If it's ribbing, you probably wouldn't even see the difference. If you just have to cast-off, that would be better than trying a "cut-and-serge" fix, and you could do it with a crochet needle.
