Enlarging bra pattern?

Does anyone have experience enlarging a bra pattern by a full cup size? I've just determined for a friend that she's wearing 6 cup sizes too small. (She's been wearing 48 DDD because that's the best that the local plus size store could do.) We've found a few styles in her size on line, but the one I want to copy maxes out one cup size too small.

've consulted my Making Beautiful Bras book, but Lee-Ann Burgess isless than encouraging and less than scientific about adding a full cupsize. If I don't feel confident that it can be done, I won't attemptit with this style. I'd go with one of the others. Interestingly, years ago her mom took her to what I'm thinking was a "custom order" bra maker. The person measured her and hand-sewed a bra, in just one style and no fittings. The cup shape was way too pointy for my friend and she never wore it. What a sad result from something that should have been empowering! But at least I got confirmation that the size I'm suggesting is also what that person came up with.

I tried on that bra in my size and it was horrid. Way too pointy and stiff, made me look like a Valkyrie or something and was very uncomfortable. Two I do have from that company are #3010 and #5910, but I don't know how large they come.

Thank you so much for saying so! We won't even order it to try on.

This is the Goddess that does come in 48J. Can't tell if it's too pointy, either.

possibilities are Triumph Doreen and Elila 1305. Does anybodyhave any experience with any of these bras?

some reason manufacturers want to put large breasts into thatpointy shape. Ugh. I am planning on making a starter pattern from thebest fitting bra and then making the changes she wants, like a lowerfront for V-neck shirts. Also, Bra-Maker's Supply sells CoolMaxfabric, which should make for a less sweaty garment. Hmm, now I'm thinking about the pointy issue. Would it be better to order a bigger cup size and edit out the extra fabric at the bust point? (And lower the underarm edge.)

I've finished Bra 4.0 from my Fantasie Rimini copy pattern. I'll post pics soon.

not come across the elila but doreen ought to win an award for the prime exapmle of all the things large people's bras shouldn't be. avoid like the plauge, in my opinion anway. sells so well because in a lot of the sizes it's availbale in it's the only thng available. THe cotton rich one might be slightly better though.

If it were me enlarging the cups, I'd definitely not do it in the center. I'd only add at the sides, top and bottom. Another possibility is to insert a narrow stretch panel and that would not mess with the overall design so much.

I had that happen from a custom made (nursing) bra too. Blood and ashes! Talk about bullet bras.... LOL. But the really nice thing about it was that it was all cotton, had no wires, gave incredible support and was adjustable in the cups! It was machine made, not hand stitched. I simply must dig around in some old boxes and see if I can find it if only to see how they did the adjustable thing. I only wore a 30 then..... ::sigh::

Yargh, I'm so turned off by Goddess. I remember 20 years ago that was the only bra that came in my own size besides Brantly. Yeah, the Doreen looks horrible in the pics. I'm so intrigued by the below bra that I'm going to order it for her in 50H. Even if not a perfect fit, it's still better than 48 DDD! It's considered a light impact sports bra, so has good stretch and breathability. The customer reviews are positive, except for the bottom band. I'll figure out a fix for it if she likes it.

can't believe that a custom bra-maker wouldn't consult about breastshape before going to the trouble of making a bra. Okay, so they maybelieve that pointy is the ideal shape for support and health, butchances are their clientele are accustomed to the very worst insupport. So, a compromise between pretty good support and pleasingshape would be good, no? Almost makes me want to take up theprofession, just to prove how much better they could do. I've started a quick glance list for my website for fullest figure women. I'll put the short list of bras and swimwear available in biggest cup and biggest band. Miss Mary of Sweden, Simply Me, Ulla Dessous, Elila, Glamorise, Aviana, Goddess, Abecita, Milavitsa, Envie, Silhouette, Kitura, Felina Melina, Triumph Doreen, Lisa's Lacies Mandy, Maryan Mehlhorn Charmline/Lidea swim.

Dear Pora,

If the bra pattern has an upper and lower cup, you can slash it in two places, top and bottom, and spread each slash 1/2 inch. Make sure that you do it away from the center of the cup, so that you don't make it pointy.

I've never heard that. Who says that, Pora? I'd like to know the reasoning. From an engineering standpoint, the more the breasts are cantilevered out over the body, the more stress on the shoulders and back. Hang a pair of scissors on the end of an outstretched straw and see what happens. Then hang the scissors in the middle, and finally right up next to where you are holding the straw. Personally, I think bullet bras exist solely for erotic value, not for health reasons. :)

I had a Miss Mary of Sweden. No support whatever... a horrible bra. I see that Avianas are being made again (another company bought the line). I hope they're not making them in Costa Rica where they were using all that faulty plastic hardware. I had one on just the other day and a strap guide broke. I don't know how I missed that one. It's into the trash with it. I'm done fixing them. One broke in the middle of a depostion once. It was audible! Boy was I torqued.
