Hey I was flipping channels this evening and ran across one of those home shopping channels where they were selling sewing machines. The brand is EuroPro and they had one computerized one with bells and whistles, one mechanical one with 48 stitches and a mechanical with something like 30 stitches. I have never heard of these machines, but the prices were good even with shipping.
Anybody heard of/own/using one of these wanna tell us about 'em?
I own a EuroPro, as well as a Kenmnore (that is 15 years old and never been to the shop!). The EuroPro was bought in 2005 and has already visited the shop, but it was because of a mistake that I made - I used metal bobbins and the bobbin case is magnetized, so it threw everything off. Now, I was lucky enough to find a lady who can fix just about every machine from treadles on up to the ones that are more complex than the EuroPro, so I didn't have to send it back to the "factory" to get fixed. I'd call around to a few sewing machine repair places near you to see if they could fix them before thinking about buying one. In my case, it was pure luck.
Having said that, I love the fact that I can do decorative stitches (flowers, sailboats, etc.) on some of my projects. I also like the fact that, if I am doing chain piecing, I can set the machine's speed, needle up/down and let it run like a maniac (which is how I tend to sew anyway).
I would say that, if you don't do as much sewing as say, me, or Kate, or any of the other professional seamstresses (not calling myself a professional, but Kate is), you might want to reconsider getting one of these machines.
Why did I buy it?? Because I wanted something to do fancy stitching, and because, when my grandmother passed away, she left money to me and the children - theirs went to college savings, mine went to getting the house fixed up (windows, dorrs, furnace, new entry steps, fence around the back yar), and then I wanted something *just* for me, so I bought it.....at Target, for $250+/-
Larisa, hoping I answered some of your questions without rambling too much
Bravo, Larisa. As an anti-elitist when it comes to sewing machines, I have to say that the best sewing machine for YOU is the one that does what YOU want it to do, no matter what it is. There are machines for every possible price range, and if the el cheapo from Target or WalMart does the job for you, then so be it. I made do for many years with a machine that was supposed to have a zigzag, but the post that made it that way needed to be kept tightened beyond my personal capability to do so. No matter, it served me well, and I made great stuff with it, for close to 15 years.
If you can afford a top-of-the-line machine, good for you. Those who can't have to decide for themselves what level of machine is best for them, at the time of their need.
I have a EuroPro mechanical sewing machine with about 42 stitches and I've had it two years with no problems. BUT, I don't do the sewing that some of the people on this board do. Mine is 'recreational' sewing such as new kitchen and laundry curtains, hemming blue jeans, t shirt sleeves, etc. I have no complaints and it does everything I've asked it do and I'm pleased with my purchase.
