Help with box cushions before I throw them and the machine out the window!

I've tackled a project that is bringing me to tears! I decided I needed new cushions for our outdoor furniture. And, of course, they couldn't be simple cushions, I wanted box cushions for more comfortable seating.

For the life of me, I can not get the middle piece sewn together with the top two pieces to where it looks correct. I've put welting on the top and bottom rectangle. For the middle piece I made one long piece that fits 3 sides (plus seam allowance and enough to fold over ends of zipper so it doesn't show ends/pull), and one piece for the zipper (two pieces, folded in half on each side of the zipper - hope that makes sense). When I try to attach the middle piece to one of the rectangle pieces, I can't get the corners to line up straight. I've cut the middle piece to have some give at the corners, but I end up with extra material when I get to the last corner, plus the corners don't look "sharp". Any suggestions at all? I've ripped out this first cushion top 3 times now! I know it's hard to explain, so I hope I've made some sense. I've tried to find hints on web sites, but haven't found anything that helps. (I do much better when I can "see" the instructions). TIA.......Jamie

Karen - I think it makes sense, at least the part about going diagonally, and not a 90 degree angle on the corner. I think I understand the clipping also! It's just so hard to make the material lay down flat, that I end up with a big pucker at the corner, or all of my welting seam allowance showing. I will give this a try! Chocolate also sounds wonderful. If I had someone to watch the 2 year old, I'd even go for the nap!

Cea, I was given some nice Fickes Reed chairs and table, along with some rather mildewed cushions. I tried to take the covers off to replace them, but the woman who made them left the bags inside, and all the zippers are irretrievably caught on them. What a mess. I ended up using something else for the chairs, and use the old cushions as seats for our rock wall. Karen Maslowski in Cincinnati

You're welcome, Jamie. And thanks--it turned out great! I maybe lost a few brain cells breathing the fumes, but my daughter will hopefully love her redecorated room when she gets home from her summer job tomorrow! New curtains, new duvet and shams, pretty waxed floor, and CLEAN. What a concept!

But at least you did it for your own furniture, and not for a payin' customer!
