Help with silk hems

Hi everyone,

I have a need for a large number (about a dozen) 18" square 8 momme silk scarves in various colors. I would like to make these my self, but I am at a loss on how to make a small, but durable hem in them. These scarves will be used in a special effect and need to compress fairly small, so I want to keep the hem as small as possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Richard

Either a rolled hem on your serger or a 1/8" narrow hem on your sewing machine. I like the 1/8 hem foot. Call your sewing machine store and ask if they have narrow hemming feet. Mine was about $6 Canadian last year.

Take a look on my web site at the Learning Zone, in which you will find instructions and diagrams for hems of various sorts. Then there's the 2 thread serged rolled edge... Examples in the Dressing Janneane project.

Ok then, your welcome! So what is it that you are making and using them for? just curious.

I am a magician and actor who is working on recreating a magic act from the late 1800s. The quality of silk you can get in magician supply shops is not always very good and is usually over-priced. Besides, I think this is a skill I can use quite a bit in my different theater projects.

Thanks again, Richard

Here's an alternate pathway, if you can use slightly larger scarves:

some primaries and mix your own colors.

Thanks guys! I wasn't familiar with the Dharma Trading Co. They seem to have a lot of what I am looking for...
