RED

Ok, so I have been working hard these last couple of days, putting together some of the red bridesmaids stuff... Did you know they were RED? Bright RED. VERY BRIGHT RED!!!

And RED poly crepe backed satin in bright RED.

Actually, they are going together remarkably well, given the type of fabric it is (bright RED poly crepe backed satin in SCARLET!).

The three older lasses have tops with over-the-shoulder straps based on view A of this pattern:

skirts are based on this one:

of the girls will have the halter tops from the first pattern with the pencil skirts from the second, and the other three will have my alteration to shoulder straps coupled with the same skirt but with the gore from view D in the back seam, like those pink silk ones I made a while back.

This time I'm sure they will look fantastic in RED. The poly satin has not puckered significantly so far...

I have concealed zips for the skirts, but need concealed basque zips for the tops, in RED. I have contacted YKK about finding RED ones to match the RED poly satin... I have yet to hear from them, so if anyone knows of a source, I'd love to hear it, particularly one here in the UK.

By the way, did I tell you these outfits are RED?

Is the bride Indian, by any chance? One of the most striking weddings I ever saw was an Indian couple at the courthouse here. The bride was in a magnificent red sari. Turns out that red is the traditional color for brides in India, I was told. A color of celebration. White, on the other hand, indicates mourning. Go figure.

So???

Second sis got married in 1986. Other sis and I wore red bridesmaid dresses. No big deal.

But I bet it's a pain in the eyes to work with...maybe try some rose-colored glasses to tone things down.

BTW, I have not yet heard of any Red Hatters getting hitched, but I can guess what colors the wedding would be.

Hmmm.... not sure I can help - does this zipper open or is it closed at one end? - I can't quite tell from the little line sketch on the web. I got a closed end concealed zipper for my posh frock top from the local fabric store - I bought purple - they may have had red. One thing that did disconcert me once I'd made the top, was because the zip is upsidedown, the little pull tab dangled down. It didn't really show although my colour match was not perfect, but I was aware of it. Is there any way round this problem?

Did you ?? ;-) GRDFC!

Very popular on this side of the pond. I have been to several weddings recently where the adult bridesmaids wore red - including my son's wedding four years ago, and my goddaughter 6 months ago.

I wore bright red in my best friend's wedding nearly 20 years ago. Six bridesmaids all in red. Red georgette over red satin, long unlined sleeves (it was November, after all), with a red satin band and bow at knee level (think flapper dress). Shoes to match.

The bride wore the same dress in white, her mother wore it in black, her sister and sister in law wore it in dark red and light red respectively. IIRC, her sister's dress was dk gray satin and her SiL's was white satin, but with the same red georgette on top.

(I was 600 miles away from the seamstress who was doing everyone else's dress, so I made mine.)

Oh, no - a real local lass! Her dress is a strapless bustier top with a bustle style skirt, and she's wearing a matching top hat and no veil. VERY smart! She's not the lacy type.

I've done burgundy and ruby before, but nothing this bright! It's nice, but RED!

Indians here wear red saris for weddings. Red is OK as a colour, but there are FIVE of them, and it is very bright! :)

I need to be able to flick a grey-scale switch in my eyeballs!

I've found a supplier of the non-concealed type: Sew Essential

Angela, who I spoke to on the phone, is ever so helpful, and, like me, bemoaned the fate of the home sewist and the professional dressmaker who cannot get the concealed ones for love nor money! YKK don't generally make the concealed basque zips available except to the manufacturing trade, which is a pain. The hunt goes on! Still, at least I have zips that will do, and as they will be down side seams, they won't show a lot anyway. They are sending me 5 RED ones in 12": I can cut them down if need be.

The RED project progresses...

First lass came for a fitting yesterday: I have stitched the alterations into her top, boned it, and put the band/straps on it... Needs zip and lining. I've stitched the alterations into her skirt, but need to mark the new seamlines on the lining before I sew that up, and then I can put the zip in it and finish it. That will be done for Friday evening, when she comes for a hem-fixing and final top fitting.

The two TALL lasses have their skirts sewn - including zips! I have one top 3/4's cut out, and need to finish cutting it and cut the other three.

I dunno why I procrastinated on this one - it's a real fun project! So far, despite the poly satin, there are no serious puckers in the seams, even in the long straight skirt side seams. I'm quite pleased with the way they are going together, and despite being VERY RED, they look good so far.

I'm not doing a diary of this one (customer request), but there will be pix of the finished outfits.
