how do I sew elastic together?

I am making a sacroiliac belt. It is a firm but moderately stretchy belt that goes around the hips for some kinds of pelvic instability.

I couldn't find the appropriate material, so I got three inch heavy elastic, and I am sewing several 48 inch strips of it together, back to back.

What is the best way to fasten the strips of elastic together so that they remain elastic? I am not using a sewing machine as I do not own one. Should I use a zig zag stitching pattern, or should I just tie knots on each side every so often?

Thanks for your help.

Yours, Dora Smith

Zigzag would be ok... How about medical type sutures?

Medical type sutures? Hee, hee, hee.

Seriously, I think that's kind of what I had in mind with the knot idea.
