iron woes

Well, yet another iron is on the terminal list.

I had a Shark for a couple years. Liked it a lot even though the steam burst button stopped working after about a year. I knew it was time to stop using it since the cord was buring my wrist if I brushed up against it. Just a little scary.

I found a "factory remanufactured" Rowenta at Big Lots believe it or not. (for $20 so it was a safe gamble!) That has worked fine for about 3 months. Now, it's auto shut off has gone insane and will shut the iron off after about 20 seconds. This makes me so happy early in the morning when I get up (because I'm a saint!! A SAINT I tell you!! lol) to iron DH's work clothes so they are freshly pressed for him to wear to work. Before I have a cup of coffee even!!

So I'm looking. I'm reading reviews.

I looked at a Reliable V100 at Atlanta Thread (oh, and don't be shocked, Atlanta Thread has changed their name to Wawak. That was a surprise when I went to their site.) I read some more reviews on amazon.com for that one. A frightening number of them say that the iron works about a year, maybe 18 months and then it quits.

I also found Oliso TG1100. About the same price point as the Reliable. I can't find any reviews for how long it will last. But the lifting itself thing sound interesting. I did find some reveiws for it on amazon from sewers who loved it a lot.

What have y'all got to say? Anyone have either of these? Heard anything good, bad or indifferent?

Thanks!!

Sharon

I've had mine for three years and it still works fine - I think it's a great iron. I almost bought a gravity feed from them, but went for this one instead. I love that it generates lots of steam with a low soleplate temp.

Oh, yeah, time to deep six that one!

You are a saint! When we were first married, I ironed DH's boxers and T-shirts (in addition to his slacks and shirts.) That didn't last long, though. ;-)

No opinion on those, but if you don't HAVE to have auto shut-off, (I would not own such an iron, when I stand up to press I want the iron hot *right now*) take a look at:

I bought that one to replace my 25-year-old Rowenta Pro (model 92?) when its thermostat bit the dust. I have used the DW 80-90 for about three months now, and am completely satisfied with it. Lots of steam, no spitting or leaking and the temperature control seems to be very accurate.

I unplug my iron when I leave the sewing room. And if I have recently been sewing, I go down to check *for sure* before leaving the house. I *never* leave my iron plate-down either, so sitting on its heel there is almost no chance it will start a fire.

Tthey make a slighlty cheaper one:

Yep, that's exactly what I thought. I always make sure the iron is unplugged when I'm done with it. But I was really fearful that it would start a fire.

When it's cold, I iron his undershirt too just so it's warm. ;) But I draw the line (in that really big sharpie marker you get to do garage sale signs) at drawers. lol

OK. So I called the lady who runs the local quilt shop. She said they got the Oliso TG1100 for the gal who teachs their beginning sewing classes. The teacher loves the iron. They have the TG1600 in the quilt shop. She said it gets knocked off the ironing board 2 or 3 times a day and it holds up to that kind of abuse. I'm fine with an auto shut off.

I decided to try the TG1100.

There's a video at the bottom of the page. It looks pretty slick. I ordered it from Amazon because I could get free 2 day shipping. (the quilt shop doesn't carry this one. Only the TG1600. I would have loved to get it from a local shop, but they sell it for $50 over MSRP and $70 over what Amazon sells it for. Yipes!!!) It will be here tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Since the other irons I've bought over the last few years average about $65, I figure if this one lasts more than 2 years, I'm ahead of what I've been spending. I'll report in next week. ;)

Best of luck, I hope it works well for you. I stuck with Rowenta because the first one lasted for so long and was such a good iron until very recently. I know that "past performance is not a guarantee of future results", but hope springs eternal.
