Lace bridal gown

-------------------------------------

I am making my daughter's wedding dress and I have designed it myself. It is a satin dress which will be overlaid entirely with lace. I will be attaching the lace skirt and lace bodice to the satin part of the dress at the waist line and then the skirts will not be attached to each other anywhere else except for the zipper. I'm wondering if I should insert the zipper into the satin dress and then just catch the lace on top of the satin once the zipper is sewn in much the way we hand stitch the lining to the back of the zipper or would I fold the lace and satin over together to insert zipper that way. If I were to do the second way, I would have to join the lace and satin at the back center seam also. Which is the best way to tackle this situation?

Thanks,

Ruth

You can treat the two fabrics "as one" for the length of the zipper, and "as two" below that. You'll have to clip the lace to the stitching line about an inch below the zipper, then complete the seam line to the hem, but lace doesn't ravel so it will not be an issue.

Alternatively, it would work to hand stitch the lace along the zipper and the allow it be free below that.

I found a picture of the back of my DD's wedding gown which shows how I handled it. This has a hidden zipper which extends about 6 inches down into the lace panel inside the pleat. I sewed the hidden zipper to the lace and satin "treated as one" from the top of the bodice and down into the pleat, then completed the seams independently below that:

My preference would be to leave the lace skirt entirely free of the underskirt. If there's no stress on the lace, the placket will hang closed of its own; if not, you can add small snaps, hooks and eyes, or simply baste the placket shut.

I agree with Kay. I made a lace dress to wear at my dd's wedding, and just left the lace entirely free except where it attached at the neckline and waistband. If this is a center back zipper, you might want to catch the lace to the satin in a couple of places after you have inserted the zipper. See how it looks.
