Needles for serger

I went to change the needles in my serger, White 1300 DE, and the universal needles ( shiemitz) I bought are not fitting as well as they should. Seems they don't want to go up into the shank as far as they need to go. I read the owners manual and it seems that they don't recommend any specific brand of needles. Any one have any input on the type or brand that may work better?

Thanks Cindy

If your manual doesn't state a specific type of needle, then you should be able to use any standard needles. I know its a silly thing - but have you checked you're putting the needle in the right way round?? In my serger, just like my sewing machine, they go in with the flat of the shank to the back.

My serger came with a little gizmo that you can use to hold the needle and push it up into place and hold it while you tighten the screw.

I use Schmetz needles all the time in my machines with no problems.

Regards,

Sarah

I'd agree with Sarah - my Bernina uses any needles I have (and we all know how picky those B's are). The needle goes in the same way round. I now have about three of those needle-holding doodahs (they're like seam rippers - never where you left them). I'd also add, undo the needle-clamp screw a tiny bit more than you did when you took the old needle out. Don't ask me why, but it seems to matter sometimes.

My Huskylock manual says to use Schmetz needles. I find they work just fine. I have a gadget for holding the needles so you can really get thm in all the way to the top. Maybe you should get one and see if it helps.

G'day Cindy

My Janome Compulock has a sticker that states it only uses HA-1SP #11-14 needles, but I've tried normal sewing machine needles and they still work Ok on most fabrics.

About two weeks ago when fitting a new needle to my embroidery machine I couldn't get the needle to slide up into the holder.....really had me puzzled, so I tried another new needle and it was OK. Then I got a magnifying glass and found the first new needle I tried had a flared top, it was only flared for about the last 1mm but is just enough that I can't get the needle to fit. I'd guess it was in a faulty batch and I ended up with one......well, maybe I'll find more as I bought 100 needles in this latest order.

Just something I had never come across before......maybe yours is something similar!!

Thanks everyone, After fiddling around for awhile, I finally got the needles set. However I noticed that the right side needle is a smidge longer that the left. I looked through all the manuals and it seemed like it is supposed to be this way. I just never noticed it before..

G'day

As Cea has explained that's how it works. Recently when I bought a Compulock I noticed the same (one needle lower than the other) and it's not mentioned in the book either, so I sat there and turned the wheel slowly by hand and watched how it worked. My previous overlocker/serger was a single needle so I hadn't come across this before.

Thanks Pam, As a last resort I emailed white and I was told that any universal needle 15 x 1 should work. HA! Where do you get the Tailormade needles?

That sounds plausible ... try again with the needle-holder dooberry and with the needle clamp screws slackened right off. On some overlockers you have to do the left-hand needle before the right-hand one, too. (Oh, and think self fortunate that 15x1 are the most readily available - unlike 13x1 or assorted curved ones)

Cindy, Be sure you have the holding screw loose enough before inserting needle. I was having a problem getting needles in my serger until I realized I had to loosen the screw more to put a needle in than I did to take an old one out. Juno

Thank for all the info. I got the needles to set with the help of hemostats... much better than the cheesy tweesers that came with the machine. Also thanks for the information about setting the left one first. I had broken the right side and was trying to replace only that one.

That's the beauty of asking around on a forum like this. If there's a c*ck-up to be made, at least three of us will have made it already - and at least one of us will probably admit to it! LOL! It actually dawned on me because I was having a bit of bother switching needles when only the RH needle was in use ... and the penny suddenly dropped.
