Odd. I do loads of machine embroidery, mostly with a gear-driven Singer

They cry out so piteously. I admitted I was powerless, but it didn't seem to help. I consider it rescue, though, and not acquisition. Though once rescued, they do need a place to stay. Sometimes people come by and take one or more away. These people tend to be TreadleOnions.

I would love a 401G.....they do chainstitch! Singer made some 'G" models (made in Germany) of the 400 series slants, and they are a rarity here in the States!!

Here's what I got when I paid $5,700 for my Viking D1. I got no dealer support and I got no lessons. Yes, both were offered. But they held classes once a year and I had just missed it. By the time the next year's classes rolled around, I had lost interest in going.

I ended up getting warrantee work done at the next dealer "up the road". Meaning I drove 400 miles round trip. Twice.

In this day and age, customer support and service is not what it used to be.

I would never look down on ANYONE for buying a machine from Wal-Mart. And unless your uncle is the used sewing machine salesman and was actually recommending a good used machine, I believe I would just pass. For the same reason that I don't buy used cars.

Some of us don't have $5,700 to spend on a top of the line machine, but still want a good one, so it makes sense to get a used top of the line machine. I just paid $1,000 for a used Viking 1+ from a local dealer. I got a warranty with it as well as free lessons. My cousin paid over $5,000 for this same model five years ago.

I buy used cars in this same fashion. I'd rather buy a top of the line used car with all the bells and whistles (which is determined by paying my mechanic to totally look it over) than a new Volkswagen Beetle.
