questions about pattern

Boo has decided he'd like a pirate coat for Renaissance faire. i don't think he'll actually wear it, of course, because it's generally too hot & humid for a coat... i have McCall's M4626

which i am making up in a rather soft bodied cotton velveteen. i was going to use lightweight linen to line it. i don't see a mention of interfacing on the collar & cuffs in the notions, but the instructions mention fusing interfacing. so, the questions are, is fuseable going to add enough body? should i just get heavy weight non-fusable & use that instead, since i'm not really a fuseable fan? i won't be making the vest (unattractive, besides the heat issue) or the lace jabot & cuffs. he has a nice linen shirt with lace (less excessive! he's 5) to wear under the coat. i'd also love pointers to somewhere online to get the gaudy trim & umpteen million buttons inexpensively. he prefers silver to gold & they *will* be washed... i was unimpressed with the gaudy trim at my local JoAnnes, both of them. lee

Cotton sateen might be better: it'll slide on and off more easily.

As this is for a kid, I'd go with the fusible: get the stuff with threads sewn into it. Pad stitching the non-fusible hair canvas type in is too much work for someone who will grow out of it in a year...

Gaudy metallic trims are not often washable. I buy mine from an Indian shop in Wembley - not a lot of help for you, I'm afraid! I also buy excellent gold and silver cast metal blazer buttons from Dainty Supplies in Washington New Town, Tyne & Wear... Washable, excellent quality, good and heavy, and cheap! :)

For trims you could try Calontir:

idea where you'd get buttons like mine across the pond...

My thoughts... Totally agree with Kate. Yep, fusible will be fine. Especially since he will outgrow it soon. And after the faire it may be just dress up clothes for when he feels like a pirate or whatever. lol

Cheep Trims is the way to go.

They sell in bulk. Usually buttons come by the gross. But it is still very inexpensive. NAYY.

is the fusible going to give enough body to the collar & cuffs? most fusibles seem rather lightweght... yeah, yeah, it's a costume... i shouldn't be so anal ;)

oh, very good! i think the metallic/rayon twist stuff washes ok, if one isn't *too* abusive... this should be fun. lee

Use two layer of you're concerned. :) With the stuff with threads in, cut on the cross, and cut each one with them at 90 degree angles so you get diagonal threads in both directions. :)

You can always stuff it in a pillowcase for washing... :)

Some fusibles have a lot of body... like fusible hair canvas. I must be a luddite because I still prefer the sew-in type.
