Sergers - choosing between Singer 14SH and Janome 504D

Greetings, all

I'm about to buy my first serger, mostly because I've got a project coming up that's going to feature a lot of chiffon and velvet and, darnit, I need rolled hems and a diff feed. Besides, I've been sewing for ten years and I'm starting to say "I wish I had a serger" at least once a month. Anyways.

I've been reading reviews all over the place, firing up froogle and whatever to compare prices, warranties and such, and I think I've narrowed it down to either:

Janome/New Home 504D (I hear it's discontinued, but I can accept that)

or

The Singer 14SH654

I've found 'em both for $200, from reliable sellers, so price isn't going to be a deciding factor.

I *was* considering the Brother 1034D but I've heard such mixed reviews

- with the bad points including it not being very sturdy, simply arriving broke beyond words and being a right pain to thread, that I've dropped it from consideration.

Anyways, I suppose it's too much to hope that someone here has used both machines and could offer a comparitive review, but I might get lucky.

I've seen positive things said about both sergers, but I'm more worried about drawbacks - particularly for a novice such as myself!

I don't need anything fancy - the ability to do rolled hems without changing plates (hence my choice of the 504D over the slightly cheaper

204D I think it is) and a diff feed are my only "must have" requirements.

Thanks!!
