This reminds me a funny tradition in my husband's family. Before we had little ones, someone in his family always received something to "play" with on Christmas Eve for the amusement of everyone there. One year it was a silly little bear that wound up and played cymbals, but the funniest one of all was the wind-up chicken. It clucked and laid eggs all over the floor. It sounds like everyone has wonderful memories of Christmas's past. Aren't we all blessed!
We always have turkey with all the trimmings, and usually a plum pudding with carmel or white sauce. We try to get together Christmas Eve and sing carols, and reminise. Sometimes we may add a ham as well, but often we have that on New Years Day.
Nice thread...everyone waxing nostalgic about their childhood. I recollect a couple of Christmas Eves, when my mother took a long rope, and tied all of the kids' room doorknobs firmly shut so that we wouldn't wake her before the Crock of Dawn. We had our big dinner X-mas eve which was also my grandfather's birthday.
X-mas day the kids could open stocking as soon as we were allowed up (usually 7) but nothing else until the adults got up around 9 and got coffee etc.
My mum's was always the "drop in" center for visiting relatives, so we always put out a buffet spread around 4:00 until whenever, for anyone dropping by.
Now that we're all over the country, I started another tradition. Every year I pick a few of the same kind of ornament - little wooden snowmen, sparkly snowflakes, etc - and use it as everybody's present-topper instead of a bow. That not only looks nice, but then they keep the ornament and it's like having me visit! (without all the laundry)

That is a great idea for us because as parents & grandparents, we keep all those hundreds of items. One year, I spent lots of money at Kinko's having copies made of all my photos of ancestors for each of the five children. You should have seen their faces light up. Emily

A couple of years ago my brother gave me a fishing pole for Christmas. I was moved to tears until I realized the pole didn't have any "eyes" and the tip was broken. Sharon
