Washing velvet

Hi folks

I've checked out the archived advice on this one on this ng. I machine wash= ed a bit of velvet, and all the pile came off. I now want to wash finished = items made from the same batch of fabric, but clearly machine washing isn't= going to work :) I no longer have any sample pieces to test. So the questi= on is... what's are the odds of it surviving a quick dip in lukewarm water = with washing powder?

thanks, NT

The odds are slim to none would be my guess. I don't presume that I've heard everything but never ever heard of the pile coming off of velvet unless it was a seriously frail fabric or subjected to abrasive wear. Methinks you'd better just gently swipe it with a barely damp facecloth. Polly

I wouldn't do it. There are washable velvets, but obviously this isn't one!

Thanks folks. I've got to wash them at some point, so its really a question= of how. I suspect you're right that they probably won't survive a dip, so = its either a wet cloth or white spirit. Given how badly they handled water,= I'd best use the spirit.

It sounds like you have some sort of "craft" velvet, not the real stuff. I washed the cotton velvet for my DGD's kilt jacket and it came through perfectly. No nap missing. You may want to invest in better quality velvet if whatever you are making will require laundering.

I certainly will. But I have 5 finished pieces now...

There are scads of velvet blends as well as 'fakes'. Cotton velvet--velvet= een--while quite wonderful for children's garments, is on my list of fakes,= and can usually be washed. Rayon velvet is lightweight, slithery, and must= be dry-cleaned. Silk velvet is luxe, quality stuff, and should be dry-clea= ned. When all else fails, do the match test--hold a bit between tweezer jaws,= light a match. If the fabric snip turns to ash, it's a natural fabric. If = it beads up into a hard, black ball, it's man-made--probably poly blend. If it consistantly falls apart, as you have said, give up on washing. Yo= u could drop in on the dry cleaner and have a chat with them. They are fabr= ic experts, and can sometimes save you a lot of grief. Cea

No, the house wasn't the only thing h and his pals wrecked. and thereaft= er followed a series of disasters. I replaced all of the broken appliances,= got a new roof & eaves, been trying to repair the inside bit by bit. Am chi= seling up rotten parquet flooring and window surround, then I'll tackle rott= en fencing.Had to repair all of the sewing machines I'd had repaired;the li= st of damage is fairly endless. Just cut out 2 sundresses to make, though.I'll squeeze them in around RH = flare-ups. Mostly enjoying my peace and quiet, and my garden. Some blessing= s come at you fairly strangely. I've been actively sending out flash fiction, short stories, poetry, and pr= ose poems to journals and contests. No word on anything yet. Some of them ta= ke 6 months to reply. Got 2 novels I'm grinding away at. Having the time to= write has been wonderfully healing. As to the damage,I wish.He tried to claim I did it,but I had dated pics = my sister took. Lawyers. Spit, hock, patooie. Anyway, when I do get a blog set up, I'll let you know. Have to be picky= about what I post, as most journals won't accept anything which has been '= published' in any way, shape, or form. I've got 4 entries in the up-coming = HRW writer's conference, which takes place here in Va.Bch. in late Sept. Keep your sewing pinkies crossed for me. Cea

Wow, cool organization! Be sure you post links if/when they publish your articles.

:-( Too awful. But you're well out of it, so YAY!

Crossing my pinkers as well as all the regular shears, best of luck!

Juno, thank you so much! I was glad to see you are still here. Yes, I'm back. Prepare to be scandalized, amazed, and occasionally irritated, but always entertained. I wish I was half this scintillating in real life, but, like most writers, I sit in a corner and take notes. Even at parties. I'm glad to be back among my sewing friends. Cea
