Glass is not necessarily made from sandstone, like most people think. It is made from mostly silica (SiO2) and various other chemicals, many containing carbon. The glass is either heated to the point of melting and shaped (or blown) into common objects. Stained glass is made by mixing different chemicals into the glass during the liquid state. It is then cut, ground to a certain shape, it's edges are wrapped in copper, and then the pieces are soldered together.
