how-to sew valences

I've been trying to find a valence treatment that I'd like in a bathroom but so far there's been nothing. I'm wondering if I should try to sew something. Can anyone recommend a good book or web site with excellent instructions for making valences and measuring for fabric, etc.? I can sew a straight seam but I'm really a novice when it comes to all of this. thanks, Myrna

Batsford Books do some good soft furnishings publications - try your local library and see what they've got

You could check out the pattern books at your local fabric store. They all have sections for home dec patterns.

Sunset has a book on window coverings.

Taria, Could you clarify for me: you used the Sunset book that you gave the link for and I might find it in Home Depot?

Do you have a lot of sewing experience? I'm trying to guage whether I'd be able to have as good results as you did.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!

Most valances are made with straight seams and should not be difficult for a person with the basic sewing knowledge. Sunset Books are sold at Home Depot, Lowe's and other home improvement stores, they contain directions for measurements, etc plus some instructions on sewing and usually have illustrations. At your public library, you can probably find other books with different illustrations, directions as well. Recently, I was at JoAnn's and hanging on a bulletin board toward the back of the store, near the restrooms, were directions for making curtains, valances and other household items. You might look there if you have such a store nearby. I know there are none in TN, and several other states. It's possible Hancock's might have the same pamphlets. Hope this helps. Emily
