How to knit seeds in watermelon hat

HI, All, I've just knitted the cute watermelon hat that's been around for a while. I came across a site where someone is selling fruit hats and in her description of the watermelon hat, she says that the seeds are knitted into the pattern. Since the seeds are scattered, I'm wondering how this can be done. Does the knitter have to carry the alternate color continuously? This seems like a waste of yarn.
