making a duvet cover

I need some advice. I'd like to sew a twin sized duvet cover. I've heard this can be done with sheets. Seems easy enough to sew 3 sides. The question is: can I use two twin sheets? I saw in one site that they recommend using a full and that seems too big. Can you help?

Thanks, Myrna

Measure the comforter and the sheets. It might fit with single size sheets. Cathi

A duvet cover slips *over* an existing comforter. Why not measure your comforter and buy sheets *slightly* larger. If twin sheets work fine, if not buy double.

I made duvet covers for twin size comforters using twin size flat sheets.

I measured the the comforters and cut my width ti size with 1/2 in seam alowance. I measured the length and then measured down from the lower edge of the top hem to the length I needed + 1/2 inch for a seam allowance on the bottom. I turned the hemmed potion down to the outside on the bottom sheet, so that it came over to top sheet (like and envelope) and put in button holes. On the top sheet I turned in the top hem, sewed it in place and placed my buttons. That way my buttons had a stable surface to be sewn to and helped in strength to prevent the buttons from tearing the fabric. On the bottom edge of my comforter I sewed hook tape and placed the loop portion on the matching spot of the comforter. HTH. If my explanation doesn't make sense please post again. I'll try to clear up any problems. Juno

Ok, First question: you used twin sheets but I think you are saying that the sheets were too large because you say you cut the width to size. Am I reading this correctly? Myrna

I have 2 comforters that are identical in design and bought at the same time in the same place.I is at lest 3 inches narrower than the other. The other thing is that twin sheets are a bit wider than than a twin comforter. Rather than have a duvet that hangs sloppy I cut the sheets smaller. You have to measure and most likely cut to get a nice fit. Like and envelope you want it a tiny bit bigger but not so large it hangs funny on the bed. One other thing is I bought the sheets at K Mart. They have lots of pretty sheets at a reasonable price. I don't like their sheets for sleeping on but the were great for the duvet covers curtains and round table cover that I made for the room. Does that clarify things. If not get back. Juno
