Please Help with a Duvet Cover?! (Xmas Present)

Hi all -

I am making a duvet cover for a king size duvet, 88" wide by 102" long.

I have fabric which is 60" wide.

I know enough to make it out of 3 panels, so you have 2 seams down the length of the cover, but here's my question:

Should the center panel be 60" wide, with 2 side panels at 14"? In this case, the 2 seams will fall at almost the edges of the mattress (which is about 60" wide).

Or should the 3 panels be equally sized, i.e. 3 panels at about 29" - but this way, I'm afraid the seams will seem more conspicuous when sitting on the bed.

Please help!! I only have 6 days to make this thing and can't afford to make any mistakes at this point!

Thanks so much for your expert opinions! Just Me....and all my fabric!

I'd make 3 equal panels and decorate the seams. Uses more fabric, but you have bits left over for making matching pillow slips!

The center panel should be the 60" with the 2 smaller panels at each side.

Ditto. The two seams should be on the edge or close to the edge of the mattress. If there is a pattern you should try to match it.

Luckily there is no pattern. It's a solid satin merlot.

Thanks for the input. That's 2 for unequal panels, and 1 for equal. I'm leaning towards unequal (less work)

Here's evens: I would go with Kate's method. Cover the seams with a strip of lace, or pipe them, or embroider them - it looks perfectly normal to have seams in such places if you make a feature of them. I think having seams closer to the edge looks more unbalanced.

I really don't want to feature the seams. Its solid, satin, luxurious fabric, without a pattern, and would look weird with some fancy trim or something running down the seams. I want to make the seams disappear.

Thanks for the help though - I can visualize what you're talking about with, say, some campy fabric.

I've made lots of them and always do the big panel in the center so the seams are approximately at the edge of the mattress, if possible, or a little way in from each edge. A nice added touch is to insert some cording in those side seams.
