maternity swimsuit help!

*sigh* Call me a cheapskate, but spending US$45+ for a swimsuit I'm only going to wear for a few months seems a bit much. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing any maternity swimwear patterns out there. The best I've found that looks possibly adaptable is at:

I think the bottom would fit under the belly all right, and the view B top should be possible to expand across the front. What I'm not quite sure of is just how much expansion will be needed given the amount of stretch in swimsuit material. Does anyone have any helpful tips for this possibly ill-judged project? In the meantime, back to my maternity trousers....

Thanks for any help!

I have made Kwik Sew 2139 swimsuit and I think it would work pretty well for a maternity suit. It isn't that hard to make - just follow the directions step by step and it came out fine.

Good luck, Nancy

Hi Sue,

Not sure how much I can help, but:-

1) I managed with my normal swimsuit for several months when pregnant before I outgrew it. I was very lucky and my SIL passed on her maternity swim suit.

2) I actually became uncomfortable swimming when about 7 / 8 mths pregnant - it felt awkward and made my backache

3) in terms of bust size I put on 3 cup sizes during pregnancy (went from a D to F / G, but the band size pretty much the same.

4) I only put on about 12" round the waist, a combination of good tummy muscles and DD lying vertically with her head in my ribs.

How this translates to amount of material in a swimsuit, I don't know, but I hope my experience helps you.

Sarah,

My problem is that my normal has always been a pair of mens trunks and a tank top. The tank top part is still fine, but the trunks are no good.

I'm planning to do water aerobics. I'm having problems with my hips, which means the 2+ mile walks that used to be normal for me are right out. Some of the other stuff I've done normally is still fine, but I thought the water aerobics would be worth trying.

That sounds about right--I haven't measured, but I have it on good authority (my better half) that my bust is quite a lot larger!

Hmmm...this DD hasn't settled on any one position yet, but going by that, I suspect if I made the top fit but not too tightly now (I'm six months along) it would be all right for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Thanks!

Sue
